Last night we had a Christmas Eve Dinner at the Swept Away Restaurant at the Samaya Resort. The drive in the traffic with regular intervals of roadworks took just over an hour but, quite frankly, it was well worth it.
Arriving at the Samaya we were greeted very warmly and even though we were not staying here it didn't feel that way at all. The staff of this stunning place are excellent.

We needed to take the golf cart shuttle down to the restaurant which was a very entertaining ride downhill (even more entertaining coming back up the hill with a few drinks under the belt). The property is massive, 5 hectares apparently, and it is beautifully maintained. The price of the accommodation, well, you might get some change out of a $1000 for the lower end of things for a night. But seriously, it looked amazing and I'd say definitely worth the price tag.

Remember, we were only here for dinner but were still treated unbelievably well regardless.

The restaurant is fabulous and we had a great table. Overlooking the river is stunning and they supply insect spray, which I used, but actually I'm not sure if it was necessary. Again, the service was next level. A welcome drink of blue margarita was so good and refreshing after the drive. Looking at the drinks list I spotted the single malts and had to order the Macallan, later I went for a double shot of the Glenmorangie and was impressed that they pronounced it correctly, the staff are very well trained.

The food was amazing, fine dining yes, hungry afterwards? No. We both loved everything about the food that we had and quite honestly we could rave about it all night. Stunning. Coming here for a Christmas dinner was absolutely a great decision and we were glad that we were able to get in.

If you're looking for something a little glamorous and upmarket in Ubud then this place is for you.

We really cannot express enough just how amazing our Christmas Dinner was. We rate it 12/10!!!

We would like to wish all our followers and viewers a very Merry Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year.

Last night we went for dinner at the Nikuna Warung & Art Gallery which is very close to the famous Ganesha Bookshop (which is a great place to visit as well). Nina has been here before, actually only a few weeks ago, and was adamant that I would like it. She had kept banging on about the nasi raja and that I should try it......arm twisted, off we went.

One thing you'll find these days in Ubud is that parking is at a premium. If you're using Grab, gojek or a driver of some description (or walking) then you'll have no issues, bring your own scooter and you "might" get lucky, just like we did. There's seating at the ground floor area which is also near the kitchen and toilets but we headed upstairs. Upstairs is a bit roomier and it's also where the drinks are done.

The staff are very friendly here and the restaurant itself is quite nice with its polished concrete and artwork on the walls. This is where you need to remind yourself that it's also a gallery! Interestingly there were a couple of tables that were marked 'reserved' however no one sat at them right up to the time that we left 🤔

Looking through the menu I was pretty impressed, the food is not ridiculously priced like other places are. Have a look at the menu (remember tax and service goes on top) and you'll see what I mean. The food here is excellent and the nasi raja is a great choice. You also get the option of having white rice or yellow (nasi kuning) and I much prefer the yellow. For those of you who are not used to trying such dishes you may be confused to find that some items are served cold, others warm and also hot. This is normal so don't go complaining!

So in the photos you will see the Nasi Raja, spring rolls and my favourite dessert dadar gulung. We also had between us a mixed juice, young coconut, sparkling water and a ginger tea. A shared serve of Spring Rolls, two nasi raja, two dadar gulung and those drinks for under $36. That is great value and in other parts of Ubud the same thing would have been at least double the price and the food, well, pretty average to go with it. Here it was great value and more importantly, delicious!

The Nikung is highly recommended 👍👍👍👍👍

These photos were taken the day after the water subsided from the heavy rain. As you can see the drainage that is the closest to our parking area is a big problem! It is full of the sand, stones and fillers being used to repair the roads, fix drainage and left in the street at building sites.

On the other side of our driveway there is debris, wood and other stuff from construction across the drainage and plant growth that has been left unchecked (for a couple of years at least). This has ultimately lead to the blockage as the debris has nowhere to go and is now compacted beneath our driveway.

Thankfully the larger drainage has remained unblocked or this would be disastrous. We have seen both sides of the road drainage blocked further down the street and it's not surprising that the flooding occurs. There is more and more concrete being laid to cover this drainage network that once fed the rice fields.

Tourists don't realise that the farmers would regularly check and clear these water systems as their livelihood depended on it. They needed the water to flow into their fields depending on the growth cycle of the rice. Sell their land for villas, hotels, supermarkets, bars, clubs etc and no one thinks about the drainage anymore. The infrastructure is failing in so many ways and no one wants to address it.......only lay blame and point fingers in every direction but the correct one 👆👇👈👉🫵

This is the cost of "progress".

Why is there so much flooding?

Well the answer is pretty simple......and controversial.

Ok so here is the unedited footage from the other day's downpour after I went out the gate to the street. It is 8 minutes long and may contain a naughty word or two (I can't recall). I was not wearing a microphone so my voice is a bit quiet but that's ok, I wasn't really saying anything mind blowing 😂

The storms that have been wreaking havoc in Bali continue to cause chaos even on a day without rain. No one seems to know when this section of the main road in Ubud (just down from the Arjuna statue) will be repaired.
