Also unearthed this woman's shoe - very heavy, with metal studs and heel - and the clay pipe

We hear of big gales in Dooega this week. Reminds us that this was our view from the cottage, before lockdown, on January 13th in 2020

The late Maggie Gallagher

It is with great sadness that the people of Dooega learned today of the passing of our most venerable neighbour, Margaret (Maggie) Gallagher (née Patten) of The Cross, Dooega.

Maggied died peacefully at her home in her 106th year. She was Achill’s oldest person and one of the oldest people in the country.

Born in 1917, Maggie lived through two world wars, the War of Independence and Civil War in Ireland and survived both the Spanish Flu and the Covid-19 pandemic.

She was as much a fixture of Dooega as the tide coming into the nearby bay and the Minaun and Knockmore hills standing sentinel behind her home.

She turned 105 in July and neighbours had a drive-by celebration at her home. Maggie was one of a kind and all who knew her were blessed.

She will be sadly missed by her loving family, daughters Anne Masuda (Dooega), Molly (Ottawa), sons Martin (Castlebar), Michael (Dublin) and Tony (Norway), sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, relatives and friends.

Reposing at Lavelle’s Funeral Home, Cashel on Thursday evening from 6pm with removal at 7.15pm to Church of Our Lady and All Saints, Dooega.

Funeral Mass on Friday at 1pm followed by burial in Glencoe Cemetery.

May her gentle soul rest in peace.
