Ballyglass volunteer crew were heading out on a shout lastnight when most people were snuggling in by the fire. The pagers went off yesterday just after the dark and cold set in. The lads downed tools and headed for Ballyglass as quickly and as they safely could.
They boarded the all-weather lifeboat and took off at high speed to the north, then east, towards Ballycastle direction, to the rescue of a lone sailor in a yacht that had damaged rigging.
Once on scene they assessed the situation and, thanks to Rescue 118 helicopter and a large fishing vessel who both illuminated the scene, they were able to set up a tow and begin the 17 mile journey to the nearest safe port Ballyglass.
However, just 3 miles from home, the rope parted from the casualty end but thankfully it was re-established promptly and the 2 vessels docked safely at Ballyglass soon after. There to meet them was Ballyglass Coast Guard unit who helped secure the casualty vessel.
Huge thanks to all involved.
