Remembering the Role of Blacksod Lighthouse in D-Day History.

Today, we remember the extraordinary contribution made by Blacksod Lighthouse and the late Maureen Sweeney to one of the most significant events of the 20th century.

In June 1944, 21-year-old Maureen Sweeney recorded weather observations at Blacksod Lighthouse on the Mullet Peninsula. Her reports of approaching storms were relayed to Allied commanders and played a crucial role in the decision to postpone the Normandy landings by 24 hours, contributing to the success of D-Day.

The story of Maureen and Blacksod Lighthouse is a remarkable reminder that even from the edge of Europe, history can be shaped in the most unexpected ways.

Today, visitors can step inside Blacksod Lighthouse and visit the nearby SOLAS - Scéalta an Atlantaigh Visitor Centre to discover this fascinating story and explore the rich maritime heritage of the Erris coast.

As we reflect on this important legacy, Blacksod Lighthouse is also preparing to celebrate its 160th anniversary on 30th June 2026 with a special programme of events.

Blacksod Lighthouse remains one of North Mayo's most treasured landmarks.

🚌 It was great to meet with Jacinta Moloney and Hollie McHugh from citylinkireland yesterday in Ballina to discuss how we can continue working together to promote and and strengthen awareness of the transport connections available to visitors travelling to our region.

As the primary public transport provider connecting Ballina, Foxford, Castlebar and North Mayo with Galway, Dublin and Dublin Airport, Citylink plays an increasingly important role in helping visitors access our destination.

With the recent expansion of services across Mayo as a whole, including additional Galway–Ballina and Castlebar–Dublin Airport routes, connectivity has never been more important for tourism, local businesses and communities. Strong transport links help make County Mayo in general more accessible while supporting sustainable tourism and regional growth.

We enjoyed a productive brainstorming session exploring new opportunities to build on our existing relationship, promote the area and showcase just how easy it can be to North Mayo by public transport.

You'll be seeing more of Citylink across our channels as we continue working together to encourage visitors to discover everything North Mayo has to offer.

Thanks to Jacinta and Hollie for taking the time to meet with us in the beautiful walled gardens at the Jackie Clarke Collection in Ballina - a primary visitor attraction for people coming to the area.
