Remembering Pilot Officer Ivor Ernest Smithson.

Ivor was a pilot officer with the Royal Canadian Airforce during WWII. While on a reconnaissance mission along the west coast of Ireland on 11 March 1944, his Wellington bomber was shot down by a German submarine. Except for Ivor, all crew were lost at sea. His bullet-riddled body was found washed ashore in the plane's life raft near Ballyconneely some four months later on 9 July. The 26-year-old newlywed was laid to rest the following day. His military gravestone, overlooking picturesque Ballyconneely bay, can be visited at the village’s old graveyard.

Lovely drive along the N59 from Clifden towards Leenaun. Stopped at the Misunderstood Heron for amazing take-away lunch (seating area close by). The walnut & feta pasties and roast tomato & pepper soup were to die for 🤩 Overlooking Killary Fjord, with amazing views of Mweelrea mountain and it's cliff-lined corries, the surrounding scenery is jaw dropping.
