Remembering Pilot Officer Ivor Ernest Smithson.
Ivor was a pilot officer with the Royal Canadian Airforce during WWII. While on a reconnaissance mission along the west coast of Ireland on 11 March 1944, his Wellington bomber was shot down by a German submarine. Except for Ivor, all crew were lost at sea. His bullet-riddled body was found washed ashore in the plane's life raft near Ballyconneely some four months later on 9 July. The 26-year-old newlywed was laid to rest the following day. His military gravestone, overlooking picturesque Ballyconneely bay, can be visited at the village’s old graveyard.
