Whale Watch West Cork is proud to be an Ambassador for THE WILD ATLANTIC WAY and is dedicated to providing our customers with a responsible, safe, comfortable and educational whale and dolphin watching experience. We seek to impart detailed knowledge on the marine mammals and other wildlife we encounter and on the wider issues of marine conservation through informed commentary with special emphas

is on the current threats facing these unique animals and their fragile environment. We directly support conservation measures through education and research. Dr Slocum has contributed to both an Australian and Chilean report on the qualitative and quantitative development of whale watching in Ireland. Nic writes a regular blog column in which he critically appraises the damage caused by issues spanning commercial whaling and marine pollution to commercial fishing and potentially damaging cetacean research. He is frequently called upon to comment on marine wildlife related issues on both national and regional radio such as Mooney Goes Wild, Moncrieff and Mary Wilson's Drive Time. Nic has contributed to and provided consultancy for television programmes such as BBC 999 with Michael Burke, ITV This Is Your Life with Michael Aspel, Channel Four A Place by the Sea with Seetha Hallett and RTE 1 Eco Eye with Duncan Stewart. Nic is a founder member of Planet Whale - changing the way we interact with whales and dolphin - and has worked with the International Whaling Commission (IWC) on the development of their five year strategic plan for whale watching and their online whale watching guidelines. Frequently featured in broadsheets such as The Telegraph, The Guardian, The Irish Times and The Irish Examiner Nic was recently quoted in the Observer as "…wanting to be involved in a process that brought the conservation message to a lot of people…and how taking people out to see animals in the wild sustainably was the ideal way…" Whale Watch West Cork have now launched their weekly online newspaper entitled Whale and Dolphin Weekly - Nic Slocum's round-up of marine mammal news around the globe. Nic Slocum and Whale Watch West Cork lead by example when it comes to best practice in whale and dolphin watching and provides regular critical analysis and comment through the news and sightings sections of the acclaimed Whale Watch West Cork website, his blog entitled Whale Watching News and Expert Views and his regular video blog entitled The Whale Watch West Cork video blog with Nic Slocum. Following four years of review of whale and dolphin watching guidelines around the world Nic has created the first species specific Code of Conduct in Ireland for boat based whale and dolphin watching

Nic welcomes contact by email or telephone to discuss issues relating to whales and dolphins, marine conservation and sustainable use of marine resources. Tel: 00 353 86 120 0027

I knew Maris 1 and this is sad news. The passing of a very great lady. My thoughts are with Maris 2 and her family and many friends around the world. Save the Whales was a remarkable achievement.

Save The Whales announces the passing of an indomitable force for whale protection. We have lost our co-founder and longtime crusader, Maris Sidenstecker I, at age 87.

Maris 1 died peacefully at home in Monterey County, California, surrounded by loved ones and humpback whale songs, after a valiant fight with cancer. Save The Whales began when her daughter, Maris II, designed a t-shirt to promote the cause of saving whales at age 14. To read more go to: https://savethewhales.org/maris1-memorial/
