🚨 ALL PHOTOMONTAGES / IMAGES SHARED AT THE TOP OF THIS POST ARE TAKEN DIRECTLY FROM THE OFFICIAL PLANNING APPLICATION DOCUMENTS SUBMITTED TO AN BORD PLEANÁLA 🚨
IMPORTANT COMMUNITY NOTICE – MUINGMORE WINDFARM APPLICATION NOW LIVE
The Muingmore Windfarm planning application has now officially been lodged with https://www.pleanala.ie/en-ie/case/324308 and the full planning file is available online for the public to view.
HOW TO VIEW THE PLANNING FILE:
Click the link above
1. Scroll to the “Documents” section
2. Open the Environmental Impact reports, planning drawings and photomontages
3. The photomontages show how these turbines could appear from multiple viewpoints across Erris
We have attached images from different viewpoints throughout the peninsula to help people understand the true scale and visibility of this proposal.
At almost 180 metres high, these turbines would be visible across large parts of Erris including homes, bogland, coastline, lakes, roads, villages and scenic areas.
Local concerns being raised include:
●Significant visual impact across the Erris landscape
●Impact on tourism and the Wild Atlantic Way
●Noise and shadow flicker concerns near homes
●Impact on wildlife, birds and protected habitats
●Concerns regarding peatland and water catchments
●Cumulative impact alongside existing and future wind developments
●Impact on local heritage, archaeology and amenity areas
●The overall scale and height of the proposed turbines
Every household across Erris could be affected in some way by a development of this scale.
HOW TO MAKE AN OBSERVATION / SUBMISSION:
Observations can be made directly through the An Bord Pleanála website using the link above
■Click into the case and select the option to make an observation
■You can support, object or raise concerns regarding any aspect of the development
■Observations should be clear, respectful and based on issues important to you and your area
There is a statutory fee required by An Bord Pleanála when making a submission

For everyone asking where exactly this is — here is the location in plain terms.
The proposed site is on the boglands of Muingmore, in the townlands of Muingmore, Doucough, Trista, Moneynierin and Bangor — the high ground directly inland from the Mullet Peninsula, sitting above Blacksod Bay.
The site boundary is just 0.5km from the village of Gweesalia. Bangor Erris is approximately 7.5km away.
Now for the scale. Each turbine would reach 180 metres to the blade tip. To put that in terms everyone in Erris knows — the Belmullet water tower is roughly 30 metres tall. These turbines would be six times that height. Thirteen of them, in two clusters, on the skyline above Blacksod Bay.
They would be visible from Blacksod Point. From Elly Bay beach. From the ferry crossing. From Bangor. From the hills above Belmullet. From the water in the bay itself.
And they would be there for 35 years.
Fergus Mac Suibhne is right — a picture is worth a thousand words. We are working on a visual showing the scale against a landscape you know. Watch this space.
In the meantime — pleanala.ie — deadline 6 July 2026. Every observation counts.

Protect Blacksod Bay. Have your say.

THIS DEVELOPMENT WILL AFFECT EVERY PERSON AND BUSINESS IN ERRIS AND EVERYBODY WHO LOVES THIS AREA

Volume matters. The board takes note of the scale of community concern. Even brief, genuine personal submissions carry weight alongside the formal technical objection.

RWE Renewables has formally applied to build 13 industrial wind turbines — up to 180 metres tall — on the boglands above Blacksod Bay, a protected European marine habitat. The planning clock is running. Every submission counts.

🎄 Belmullet’s Christmas Lights Shine Again – Thanks to Local Support! 🎄

This year, Belmullet almost faced a Christmas without lights. Rising energy costs, ageing equipment, and financial challenges meant our town’s festive tradition was under real threat. For a while, it looked as though the streets of Belmullet might stay dark this Christmas.

But the people and businesses of Belmullet and Erris had other ideas. When the situation became clear, Erris Chamber stepped forward to take up the mantle — determined that the lights, and the Christmas spirit they represent, would not be lost.

Leading the Charge
Momentum matters in fundraising, and it was Carne Links Golf Course who lit the first spark with an immediate and very generous commitment. Their support inspired others to rally behind the cause, and soon the whole community came together.

Thanks to this incredible collective effort, the funds were raised — and Belmullet’s Christmas lights are once again shining proudly across the town. Every glowing bulb is a reminder that when our community faces a challenge, we meet it together.

A Message of Thanks
While these businesses sponsored the lights, each one wants to share a message with you — our customers. Without your loyalty, none of this would be possible. Every time you shop local, eat local, or use local services, you’re supporting families, creating jobs, and helping to keep our town alive and bright.

So this Christmas, as you enjoy the festive glow, remember the businesses that made it possible — and please continue to support them all year round.
