You’re Invited | Interpretive Board Unveiling

We are delighted to invite you to the unveiling of our new Interpretive Board this Sunday, May 3rd at 12 noon, at the Post Office building in Carrigaholt.
Funded through a successful grant application, this project is our way of giving something back to a community that has given us so much. We believe that when we invest in our place and our people, we all grow stronger together.
The board brings together five nuggets of key local interest, offering a snapshot of the rich heritage around us. Over the coming months, we will be sharing more in-depth stories on our website, building on what you will see here.
The unveiling will be followed by a very special archaeologist-led walk with Dr Conn Herriott of AMS, who brings over 20 years of experience in both underwater and terrestrial archaeology. His work has taken him across Ireland and around the world, including the UK, Portugal, Greece, the USA, Turkey, Australia, and Israel, so we are certainly in good hands.
This “field trip” will begin at 12:00 noon in the Square, taking in a route from the village to the castle, on to Kilcredaun Lighthouse, and back again. As our own club member and archaeologist Brigid puts it, the walk will take us “from prehistory right up to the present by exploring the archaeological heritage of Carrigaholt.” You’ll be back in time for the match and all! 💙💛
We would love you to join us for what promises to be an engaging and enjoyable afternoon of discovery.
A sincere thank you to Burren Beo Trust for their support in helping bring this project to life and in showcasing the place we are all so lucky to call home.

Back in the water after a long winter… and we’ve been very busy preparing… 👀🐬

Boat in the water ✔️
Binoculars polished ✔️
Tea supplies fully restocked (priorities) ✔️

All that’s left now is some good weather and a few dolphins to show off 🤞

Season kicks off May 2nd — book your spot via the link in bio and come join us on the water

We’re often asked how we get the dolphins to come so close to the boat…

Over the years, we’ve developed a few techniques—but there’s one that consistently works best, which we’ve decided to share with you today, on the 1st of April.

The tin whistle.

Dolphins are incredibly responsive to sound, and certain traditional tunes seem to catch their attention more than others 🎶🐬

Interestingly, the Ballybunion dolphins show a clear preference for the Kerry Polka… we’ve tested it more than once.

Such a joy to be part of this magical book!

January 2026 is already coming to an end and it’s time for a Wild Boreen update. Ever since this project started about a year ago with the idea to write a short natural history guide on West Clare, it has grown into something very different. With Nick Larter as a co-author, and support and contributions from Dr Eamon Doyle of the The Burren and Cliffs of Moher UNESCO Global Geopark, Mary Kate Bolger of Dolphinwatch Carrigaholt, Trea & Kevin Heapes of Pure Space, and the Burrenbotanist Sinéad Keane, as well as a foreword by acclaimed filmmaker Katrina Costello, the book has become a comprehensive piece of nature writing exploring the geology, habitats, flora and fauna of West Clare alongside stories from the people who have a deep connection to this place.
The manuscript is currently getting a final proofread by Sally Vince of Banner Books, then we will add some images, and put everything into shape for printing. If all goes to plan, first and foremost securing funds for printing, the book, which at the moment runs under the working title “The River and the Sea - A Nature Journey of West Clare” will be out this summer. Watch this space for updates.
