The Ahenny High Crosses represent among Ireland’s oldest and finest examples of early medieval Christian stone carving, dating to the 8th or 9th century and standing in the historic graveyard of Kilclispen monastery in rural County Tipperary. These two remarkable sandstone crosses, each standing over three meters in height and carved with exquisite geometric and figurative designs, constitute irreplaceable monuments to the artistic and spiritual achievements of early Irish Christianity. Positioned on the slopes of Carrigadoon Hill overlooking the Lingaun Valley—an archaeological corridor of exceptional historical significance spanning both Leinster and Munster—Ahenny’s crosses form part of the Ossory Group, a distinctive regional cluster of early high crosses that represents some of the earliest ringed high crosses in Ireland. The crosses are unique among Irish examples for their design philosophy: rather than depicting biblical scenes in the manner of later high crosses, the Ahenny crosses replicate in stone the metalwork, rope, and enamel studs of original wooden and bronze ecclesiastical monuments, providing irreplaceable visual evidence of early medieval craftsmanship.

Nestled in enchanting woodlands at the foot of the Comeragh Mountains, just south of Clonmel on the Tipperary-Waterford border, Carey’s Castle (also known as Glenabbey House) is a romantic 19th-century ruin beside the Glenary River. Originally a medieval monastic grange tied to the Cistercian Abbey of Inishlounaght near Clonmel, the site was granted to alderman Edward Gough post-16th-century Dissolution. In the early 1800s, local schoolmaster family the Careys built this whimsical folly, blending Gothic windows, Romanesque arches, a Celtic round tower, and Norman hall for historical flair. Featuring a walled garden and ice-house, it was sold in the 1840s after the Careys emigrated to Australia. Acquired by Lt. Col. Nuttall Greene, it fell into ruin post-Great Famine bankruptcy. Today, managed by Coillte, it’s a free-access hidden gem on the East Munster Way trail, ideal for peaceful walks amid ancient oaks and wildflowers.

Caerphilly Castle, built from 1268 to 1271 by Norman lord Gilbert de Clare, is the largest castle in Wales and one of the biggest in Britain. It was constructed to control Glamorgan and defend against Welsh prince Llywelyn ap Gruffudd. The castle introduced concentric water defences, including artificial lakes and multiple rings of walls, making it highly fortified. It played key roles in medieval conflicts and has striking features like large gatehouses and a leaning southeast tower due to subsidence. Today, Caerphilly Castle remains a significant historic monument with extensive ruins and exhibits, managed by Cadw

Leacanabuaile Stone Fort, or Leaca na Buaile, is a historic stone ringfort and National Monument near Cahersiveen, County Kerry, Ireland, about 3 km northwest of the town. Located on the Ring of Kerry, it’s just 375 meters from Cahergal Stone Fort, ideal for a combined visit. Dating to the 9th or 10th century AD, it was a defended farmstead for a wealthy landowner and their family. Excavations in 1939–1940 uncovered iron tools, bone combs, and bronze items, reflecting early Christian life. The circular dry-stone walls, over 3 meters thick, enclose a 30-meter diameter with beehive houses and an 11-meter souterrain. Partly reconstructed, it offers stunning views of the Iveragh Peninsula. Access is by foot from Cahergal’s parking area, as it’s on private land with no dedicated car park. Local folklore of fairies guarding the stones has aided its preservation, making it a fascinating stop on the Ring of Kerry.
