Colour Your Life Story
Week 7 VIOLET - The Crown Chakra
VIOLET is the 7th colour of the visible spectrum of light and is the colour of the Crown Chaka, located, as one would expect, on the crown of the head. In the spectrum it is the light returning from the darkness of INDIGO and is where the end meets the beginning (RED). The mingling of VIOLET and RED gives us MAGENTA. It is sometimes mistakenly referred to as PURPLE but that hue is a mixture of RED and BLUE while VIOLET is pure and unmixed. VIOLET has a cool receding quality.
The major quality of VIOLET is that it connects us to our Spiritual Self. Through this connection we sense the oneness of all things and allows us to be open to inspiration –the breath of the Spirit.
VIOLET stimulates purity of thought and feeling and leads us to devotion, healing, creativity and an appreciation of beauty and harmony.
From a physical perspective, VIOLET stimulates the spleen and bone growth and influences the health of all the glands and their production of hormones. It has a soothing and tranquilizing effect on the nervous system.
Historically, VIOLET symbolizes royalty and wealth and was the colour of the robes of the élite in the Roman and Byzantine periods. Since the Middle Ages, it has been associated with princes of the church and can still be seen in the zucchetto or skull-cap worn by bishops. In the 19th century, a pale VIOLET, called MAUVE, was a colour often used for the clothing of those leaving off the black of mourning but not yet ready to adopt more prevalent colours.
In painting, it was used extensively by the pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood of the mid-19th century and Van Gogh showed us his love of it in his beautiful Irises. In darker tones it is often used to represent magic and fantasy.
The earliest VIOLET pigments were made from the minerals manganese and hematite, various sea creatures and also vegetation such as lichens.
And, of course, it is the name of a beautiful flower of the family Viola and different tones of it has given us the names of other beauties such as lavender and lilac. It is also used as a girl’s name as we know from our dear Violeta!
The complimentary colour of VIOLET is YELLOW.
This week our facial exercises concentrated on the jaw and neck to counteract the loss of elasticity that ageing presents.
And so we complete our journey through the seven colours of the visible spectrum of light. We have moved them, gestured them and painted them. Above all, we have experienced them - in class and in the days between classes when we wore them every day. By noticing our likes and dislikes, we learned about ourselves – the most valuable lessons of all.
The results of our artistic endeavours are on show at Lotus Beauty. We invite you to drop by to see them and perhaps be encouraged to join us for the journey when we begin again in January.
Thanks for your interest.
Remember to smile!
