On this day, June 20, 1631, the Sack of Baltimore, the biggest single attack by the Barbary pirates on Ireland took place.

The village of Baltimore in West Cork, Ireland, was attacked by pirates from the Barbary Coast of North Africa (what is now Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya).

The Sack of Baltimore was later made famous by the band The Darkness in their song Roaring Waters.

On Feb 6th 1918, the British parliament passes the Parliament (Qualification of Women) Act which allows women to stand for election.

In December of 1918, Sinn Féin’s Countess Markievicz becomes the first woman elected to House of Commons.

She is in jail in Holloway Prison when elected.

On this day in 1939, William Butler Yeats died in the south of France. He was Ireland’s most distinguished poet and playwright of the 20th Century.

Yeats’ works drew heavily on Irish mythology and history and in 1923, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. Yeats went on to pen other influential works, including The Tower and Words for Music Perhaps and Other Poems.

Born on this day in 1879 in Cork was Joseph Killackey. Killackey listed in the United States Navy and was sent as a Landsman to China to fight in the Boxer Rebellion where received the Medal of Honor for bravery.

Killackey died on September 8, 1946, and is buried in Mount Moriah Cemetery Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

This week marks the week where a vote in the Irish Parliament (Dáil Éireann) unfortunately set the scene for the Irish Civil War.

Thirty-two days after the signing of a Treaty in London granting Ireland independence from the United Kingdom for the first time since 1800, a divided Irish Parliament (Dáil Éireann) voted sixty-four to accept the Treaty with fifty-seven against.

With De Valera and his supporters’ refusal to accept the democratic vote of the Irish Parliament (Dáil Éireann) this meant civil war was inevitable.

Civil war was now just months away between men and woman who fought side by side during the War of Independence.
