Winter Solstice

The earliest people on Earth knew that the sun’s path across the sky, the length of daylight, and the location of the sunrise and sunset all shifted in a regular way throughout the year. They built monuments such as Newgrange in Ireland, Stonehenge in England – or, for example, at Machu Picchu in Peru – to follow the sun’s yearly progress.

Great shot Great place

Dawn mist in the Boyne Valley at Newgrange.

On the valley terraces leading to the River Boyne below Newgrange are three large mounds ranging from 27m to 40m in diameter. All three are probable passage tombs, likely dating to the same period as Newgrange itself. Another large mound, surrounded by a free-standing kerb, is in a field further east along the same ridge as the large passage tomb.

This particular one, together with the enormous earthwork bank in which the mound sits, is known as ‘Site A‘ after a naming scheme for the Boyne Valley monuments devised by George Coffey in the late 19th/early 20th century. Today it is also enclosed by a modern square-shaped hedge. It has not been excavated.

The huge embanked enclosure was mostly ploughed away by the time it was recorded on the 1837 Ordnance Survey map, but is clearly visible from above when the sun is low or during exceptionally dry weather when the field is parched.
