The legacy of Fungie the dolphin is visible everywhere in the seaside town of Di**le. From souvenirs stacked on shop shelves to being immortalised in a bronze statue at the harbour front, the story of how one dolphin captured the hearts and imagination of locals and visitors alike is part of a wider tale of enchantment.
Despite the famous dolphin’s disappearance a few years ago, tourism in the area has evolved, as the scenic splendour of the deep sea and the West Kerry landscape remain integral attractions that continue to draw visitors.
While there is no question that Fungie’s contribution helped put Di**le on the map as a tourist destination, his popularity was understandably seized upon by many locals, for whom the sea has always been a source of livelihood and opportunity through the generations.
Initially established by six locals in 1987, when interest in Fungie mania was at its peak, Di**le Dolphin Boat Tours was founded and has never looked back.
