Great Blasket Island

Great Blasket Island The Great Blasket Island Experience. • History • Heritage • Nature. Departing daily at 11am from Dingle Marina (directly below the Tourist Office).

Occupied from pre-history, the island overlooks the location where a number of the Spanish Armada ships were wrecked. The small farming and fishing community exceeded a population of 150 in the early 20th century, but had dwindled to a small number when the island was vacated in 1953. The old village above the Trá Bán (White Strand) is situated on the north-eastern side of the island, facing the m

ainland and Slea Head

The most thrilling way to see Dingle Bay; experience the outstanding natural beauty of the Dingle coastline, paired with an exciting speed boat blast approximately 6h round trip €80pp. Stopping on both legs of the tour to we cruise out of the harbour, increasing speeds to blast along the beautiful Dingle coastline taking a wide arch to give ourselves a better chance of spotting one of the many other whales, dolphins or porpoise and abundance of sea birds of Dingle bay. Reaching the Great Blasket Island we tour to the Northern shore which is a hotspot for Grey seal activity, the island is home to a large colony and we frequently see large numbers here. We then land our passengers for 3.5 to 4 hours where they can take a tour of the Village provided by the OPW and explore the many wonders the island has to offer. A complementary Tea/Coffee is provided for all our customers. On the return trip we take a wide arch off the island to give ourselves a good chance of spotting some wildlife again then cruise close to the coastline and explore the spectacular cliffs outside Dingle harbor. No Rush or time restraints for a personal easy going trip with a maximum capacity of 12 passengers. The 'Peig Sayers' Stormforce 11 is the flagship of the Redbay range, offering the best that RIBs can offer. She has a indoor 12 seater cabin for those who want to keep dry and warm. The Peig Sayers incorporates quality, speed, safety and comfort. You are not seeing the best of Ireland unless you catch it from the water. Our Speedboat Eco-Tour takes you from Dingle Harbour out and around the beautiful peninsula coastline. Feel the fresh Atlantic air on your face as you experience breathtaking views of the staggering cliffs, wildlife that is native to the Dingle shores.

Every night here the sunset is different. Such a joy to see. The different people who've stayed in the cottages over the last few weeks have all said they wish they could stay longer 😄🥰

A big thank you to Sarah for featuring a lovely piece on the new caretakers, James and Camille 🙏

Waking up to the view out a cottage window on Great Blasket Island is the new normal for a just married couple who have been entrusted as caretakers of the island for six months.

With no full-time inhabitants for more than 70 years, the island which is two kilometres off the Kerry coast is currently home for Camille Rosenfeld (26) from Minnesota in the US and James Hayes (37) from Tralee, Co Kerry and their occasional visitors.

Camille told the Sunday Independent they were unsure if they would actually reach the island on their first day, April 1, due to the weather.

However, a 6.30am boat ride with Billy O’Connor at the helm ensured no rough weather would scupper the start of a new way of life for them which will last until September 31.

Mr O’Connor is the owner of three holiday cottages and restaurant that Camille and James will run until September — a coveted position, which routinely sees thousands of applications from those seeking the quiet life.

For his 90th birthday, Jim Callery has decided to walk the 165km National Famine Way Walk from Strokestown, Co Roscommon to Quays in Dublin in aid of an immigrant charity.
Jim has dedicated a lot of personal time and effort preserving and raising awareness to Irish immigrants and the hardship they had to endure during the Irish Famine.

If you would like to donate, we have attached the gofundme link below 🙏👍🏼
