Many of you know that in 2023 we opened an Airbnb on our property, The Garden Nook.
We poured our hearts, souls, and an incredible amount of money into creating what has become a very successful short-term rental in the beautiful town of Dunfanaghy.
However, as of May 2026, the government plans to introduce nationwide restrictions on short-term rentals. These restrictions are not only deeply flawed, but based on information coming from Donegal County Council, effectively impossible to comply with. I have personally been told that Dunfanaghy will face a blanket ban on all Airbnbs.
This decision will not only damage tourism in our special town, but it will also place families like ours in serious financial difficulty. This income is what helps us keep our heads above water.
Because of this, The Garden Nook will no longer be able to accept guests after May 2026.
So here is where I am asking for your help.
Between now and May 26th, I am trying as hard as possible to secure as many bookings as I can, to give us some breathing space while we try to find an alternative income. If you could share our page or this post, it would mean more than I can put into words.
Please know that I fully understand the housing crisis. This crisis was not created by small hosts — it was created by government policy — yet once again, ordinary people are being asked to pay the price.
This is not a second home. This was a garage we renovated so we could hold on to our family home.
Thank you to everyone who has supported us so far, shared our journey, stayed with us, or even just read this. Every share truly helps 💛
