The Keshcarrigan Bowl • Leitrim • c.1st Century AD

This finely made bronze bowl was discovered in a tributary of the River Shannon in County Leitrim. If you look closely at its handle, you can see it is shaped to look like a bird's head, with a gracefully curving neck, and a large bill with eye sockets that once possibly held inlays of enamel or glass.

It may have been a representation of a swan, duck, or other waterbird. Birds appear often in Irish mythology, and waterfowl were of particular significance in the past, as they could transcend between water, earth, and sky. This small bowl may have been a libation cup, used in ceremonial occasions.

The Keshcarrigan Bowl has similarities to other examples found in the south-west of Britain in places like Cornwall and Devon and in Brittany.

You can find it in the Kingship and Sacrifice Exhibition in the National Museum of Ireland.
