September marks the start of one of our favourite times of year in Ireland.

The days begin to shorten. The landscape slowly changes colour. There’s a crispness in the air, mist settling over the hills, and that unmistakable feeling that autumn is on its way.

And in Ireland, autumn has an even deeper meaning.

This is the season of Samhain, the ancient Celtic festival that marked the end of summer and the beginning of winter - and the tradition from which Hallowe’en evolved.

Castles surrounded by autumn colours. Ancient ruins disappearing into the mist. Fires glowing in cosy pubs. Long evenings filled with stories, folklore and Irish tradition.

There’s something wonderfully atmospheric about Ireland at this time of year.

If these walls could talk… oh, the stories they could tell!

Welcome to Sean’s Bar in Athlone, officially recognised by Guinness World Records as Ireland’s oldest extant public house. Its history is traced back to around 900 AD - meaning people have been stopping here for a drink for more than 1,100 years!

Here are a few fun facts about this legendary Irish pub:

🍺 1. It dates back to 900 AD
The story begins with an inn established by Luain Mac Luighdeach beside a crossing point of the River Shannon. Athlone itself grew around this important crossing.

🧱 2. There are ancient walls inside
A section of the old wattle-and-wicker structure associated with the early inn can still be seen inside the pub.

👑 3. Kings and chieftains passed through
Sean’s Bar says its location has welcomed everyone from chieftains and kings to travellers making their way across Ireland.

🚌 4. It was once a stagecoach stop
In 1736, landlord Mark Begg established a stagecoach service from the west side of the Shannon to Dublin — with departures from right outside the pub!

🥃 5. It has its own whiskey
Today, Sean’s Bar even produces its own whiskey, continuing the pub's long association with Irish drinking culture.
