Saint Brigid's day is celebrated at the start of February in Ireland, and the first Monday of the month has been a bank holiday since 2023. Renowned Scottish novels include classics such as Treasure Island and Waverley, and more modern works such as The Wasp Factory and Trainspotting. If you'd like to stay in some beautiful castles during your time in Ireland, the stunning Ashford castle offer luxurious 5 star accommodation. For an island escape, let us book you a stay in Waterford Castle which was owned by the Fitzgerald family for hundreds of years. Kinnitty Castle in County Offaly also offer wonderful accommodation on a castle site which dates back to the 13th Century. Hogmanay is the Scottish word for the last day of the year or New Year’s Eve and is regarded as the most important Scottish holiday. For hundreds of years Christmas was essentially banned in Scotland, so until the mid 1900s many Scots worked through Christmas and celebrated their holiday at New Year. Edinburgh's Hogmanay Street Party, which began in the 1990's, is now famous around the world, with visitors travelling from around Scotland and the world to take in the celebrations.

The Mari Lwyd is a unique Welsh tradition which sees the horse-figure of the Mari Lwyd (meaning 'Grey Mare') carried door to door by wassail-singing groups during the Christmas season. It is thought to bring good luck and festive cheer, and is linked to Celtic folklore, and the first written record of the tradition was in 1800.
