So much of the most beautiful art in Rome can be found off the beaten path. This is why today, at 2pm EST, Liz Lev will be offering a free lecture over Zoom entitled "Beyond Bernini: Masters of Baroque Sculpture." During the lecture, we will explore some of the oft-overlooked sculptors of the 17th century, hopefully encountering some works that we've never seen before, but which strike us just as powerfully as the most famous pieces in the Vatican Museums. A few days ago, we learned that the jury of the Venice Biennale--one of the most important international exhibition spaces for contemporary art--resigned over debates over the participation of Russia and Israel.

The Masters' Gallery acknowledges that art has always been intertwined with politics. However, there is a difference between using art to unite people with different perspectives and using it as a tool to punish your political opposition. Furthermore, it is not effective to punish artists simply due to their country of origin, many of whom do not even agree with the actions of their government.

Couldn't art be used for diplomacy? Can't it be a way of understanding the other? Those who criticize dictatorship and censorship cannot turn around and put both into practice.

The Biennale will officially open in just a few days. We at the Masters' Gallery wish all of its artists the best of luck and the freedom to express their perspectives through art, whether or not we agree with it.

From March 14 to August 23, an exhibition is on display in Florence, entitled "Rothko in Florence." At the Museo di San Marco--home of Fra Angelico's Annunciation and Last Judgement, to name just two--curators have chosen four abstract works by Mark Rothko to exhibit alongside Fra Angelico's spiritual scenes. The display of these works alongside one another is utterly luminous. It reminds us that art is a living field, one which develops in a dialectic, one which should provoke us to reflect not only on our own souls but on the soul of our times.

Entitled "From Martyrs to Majesty: The Story of the Pio Cristiano Museum," this lecture will tell the incredible story of our first saints and the art which commemorates them.

Livia Galante, PhD--archaeologist and guide with LizLev Tours--recently visited the exhibition inside the Trevi Fountain, entitled “Maarten van Heemskerck and the Fascination of Rome: Visual Journeys through the Eternal City." According to the brilliant Livia, this exhibit "is far more than a display of Renaissance drawings—it is an immersive exploration of how Rome was mapped, imagined, and reassembled through the eyes of a Northern artist encountering it for the first time. What makes this show particularly compelling is its focus on the idea of visual cartography: not just maps in the strict sense, but drawing as a way of navigating, understanding, and ultimately reconstructing the city."

One of the best things about booking a tour with LizLev Tours is that you can book a tour of the Vatican Museums for 6:30am, before the museums even open for the day. This allows us to speak at a normal volume (and be able to hear!), get one-on-one time with the sculptures which inspired Michelangelo, and get a private moment of awe in the Sistine Chapel.

This morning, it was so foggy that you couldn't even see the dome of St. Peter's Basilica from the courtyard!
