As this week will make abundantly clear, not every golfer is made for links play.

But Joe Carr, who honed his craft at Portmarnock Golf Club Est 1894, thrived amid the dunes, hollows, bunkers, and gales.

And Royal Portrush Golf Club was no different.

In 1960, Joe won his third Amateur Championship - defeating Robert Cochran by 8 & 7 - on the same Dunluce Links that will demand an equally nerveless performance from the next name added to the Claret Jug.

Now, 55 years later, Marty Carr is representing the family at Portrush.

Officially, he’s not actually playing at The Open, but you never know!
