Very few amateur trophies eluded Joe Carr.

Somehow, despite a record 11 appearances as player and captain, The Walker Cup remained beyond his reach.

Enter the next generation.

In 1971, the USA came to St Andrews Links in search of a 13th consecutive victory. To call them favourites would be an understatement (sound familiar?).

But Roddy Carr didn’t get the memo.

Around the Old Course, he scored 3.5 points, including the decisive putt on 18, to help Great Britain and Ireland win their first event since 1938.

And Dad was there to see it.

Perhaps, 55 years later, the hosts will defy expectations again on another hallowed layout shaped by Old Tom Morris.
