OUR LADY OF LOURDES GROTTO IN DERRY.
I know there are many beautiful grottos dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes all around the world. I visited this one this morning at St. Eugene’s Cathedral in Derry.
An absolutely beautiful cathedral where there is also a lovely exhibition about Bishop Daly.
Well worth a visit.

The small village of Bartres is situated in the countryside about 5kms from the town of Lourdes. When St Bernadette was about 10 months old her mother Louise Soubirous, was injured when a candle fell on her chest and was unable to nurse her baby daughter so Bernadette was brought to the village of Bartres to the home/farmhouse of Marie Aravant to be ‘fostered’.

Marie Aravant was to be her ‘wet nurse’ until she was weaned, as Marie Aravant herself had just lost a new born child so had milk to nurse Bernadette. Bernadette remained in Bartres until she was approximately 2 years old.

FRANZ WERFEL’S CONNECTION TO LOURDES.
Franz is the author of the book The song of Bernadette, but what is his connection to Lourdes?

Franz was a German-speaking Jew born in Prague in 1890. He became well known as a novelist and playwright, and was well known for his satirical plays lampooning the N**i regime. Because of this he and his Wife Alma fled their home and ended up in France.
A friend had advised them to head towards Lourdes where they might find sanctuary and they did find sanctuary there.

As they were hunted by the Gestapo, the Werfels experienced anxiety for their hosts as well as themselves. A number of families took turns in giving them shelter in Lourdes. These people told the Werfels the story of Bernadette and Our Lady.

Franz vowed that, if he and his wife escaped, he would put off all tasks and write Bernadette's story into a novel.
They did escape to America and in 1941 his book The song of Bernadette was published. In 1943 it was made into a film.
