I am lounging in F Scott Fitzgerald’s bathroom while Zelda poses in the sun-drenched conservatory, her portrait exuding seminal Flapper style. All that’s missing is a whiskey sour to sip and a string of pearls to swirl.

This house is the only surviving home of the jazz age author and his socialite artist-writer wife, located in a leafy corner of Montgomery and recently opened as a museum. It’s where Francis Scott started to write Tender is the Night and is filled with the couple’s photos and letters, Zelda’s paintings and her record collection. Her jazz favourites play as we browse the rooms. Unusually, for a museum, writers can apply to stay in its two-bed suite or tourists can access it through Airbnb (from €125; thefitzgeraldmuseum.org).
