Happy Birthday John McClure!

Today we remember the unrepentant Cork Fenian and member of the celebrated 'Cuba 5', John Mc Clure who was born on this day in 1846.

McClure was 'out' during the Fenian uprising of 1867 and took part in a daring raid on a Coast guard station near Youghal. Praising the raid later John Devoy later wrote, "The capture of the Coastguard Station at Knockadoon, some ten miles from Youghal, County Cork, by CAPTAIN JOHN MCCLURE and PETER O'NEILL CROWLEY, on the night of March 5, 1867, was the neatest job done by the Fenians in the Rising. It was taken by a well planned surprise, without the firing of a single shot or the shedding of one drop of blood, the ten Coastguards were made prisoners and their rifles appropriated."

Arrested for his revolutionary activities, McClure was one of 30 Fenian prisoners released under amnesty by Britan on January 5 1871. However the Fenians were only released on condition that they serve the rest of their sentence in exile. On his release, McClure along with his Comrades, John Devoy, O'Donavan Rossa, Charles Underwood O'Connell and Henry Mulleda sailed aboard the "Cuba" to New York where they received a rapturous welcome and set about reorganising the republican movement in the United States.

In the famous photo of the Cuba 5 below, John McLure is standing on the right hand side next to O'Donavan Rossa.

Today we proudly remember Countess Constance Markievicz, a dedicated socialist republican, founder of Na Fianna, and leader of Cumann na mBan and the Irish Citizen Army, who died on this day in 1927.
Markievicz was second in command at the Stephens Green Garrison during the 1916 Rising and was sentenced to death for her role in the fight. This was later commuted to imprisonment because of her s*x, a fact which outraged the Countesses socialist principles.
On release from prison Markievicz was centrally involved in the re-organisation of the republican movement and in 1918 was successfully elected to an Chéad Dáil Éireann where she became Minister for Labour and the second female cabinet minister in history.
Markievicz took an active part in the Tan War and was deeply opposed to the treaty of surrender and the 1922 counter revolution. Markievicz fought in defence of the republic declared in 1916 and remained committed to the cause of national liberation for the rest of her life. At her Funeral in 1927 the Irish Citizen Army provided the guard of honour to the leader they had affectionately known as 'Madame' as Markievicz was laid to rest in Glasnevin Cemetery.

On this day in 1916, the German trawler, SS Libu, sis guided as a Finnish fishing trawler, the Aud, set sail, from Germany bound for Banna Strand Co. Kerry carrying a cargo of 20,000 rifles and a consignment of machine guns to arm the republican forces for the 1916 Rising. The shipment had been negotiated by Roger Casement as part of his mission to Germany to win support for the Irish Struggle for national Liberation.

Margaret Skinnider, Scottish born member of the Irish Citizen Army and Cumman na mBan who played a leading role in the fight during the 1916 Rising.

Skinnider was stationed with the Republican Garrission at St.Stephens Green where her skill as a crack shot was put to devastating use. Shot and wounded during the Rising, Skinnider was taken to St. Vinicents Hospital and managed to evade arrest by escaping from the hospital and going on the run.

You can read Margaret Skinnider's fascinating account of the Rising, "Doing my Bit for Ireland" free online, here:

On March 5/6 1867, the Irish Republican Brotherhood launched an armed uprising against British Rule in Ireland. Although unsuccessful in breaking the connection with England, the Fenian Uprising successfully passed the flame of freedom on to a new generation of Irishmen and Women, a generation that would nurse that flame until it became an unstoppable fire during the 1916 Rising.

in their message to the Irish people of the world, also known as the Fenian Proclamation of 1867, the Fenians set out their radical egalitarian vision for Ireland, a vision that would later be built on in the 1916 Proclamation.

Today in honour of the Fenians we republish their radical proclamation of an Independent Irish Republic. It remains an inspiring read:

The Irish People of the World

We have suffered centuries of outrage, enforced poverty, and bitter misery. Our rights and liberties have been trampled on by an alien aristocracy, who treating us as foes, usurped our lands, and drew away from our unfortunate country all material riches. The real owners of the soil were removed to make room for cattle, and driven across the ocean to seek the means of living, and the political rights denied to them at home, while our men of thought and action were condemned to loss of life and liberty. But we never lost the memory and hope of a national existence. We appealed in vain to the reason and sense of justice of the dominant powers.

Our mildest remonstrance's were met with sneers and contempt. Our appeals to arms were always unsuccessful.

Today, having no honourable alternative left, we again appeal to force as our last resource. We accept the conditions of appeal, manfully deeming it better to die in the struggle for freedom than to continue an existence of utter serfdom.

All men are born with equal rights, and in associating to protect one another and share public burdens, justice demands that such associations should rest upon a basis which maintains equality instead of destroying it.

We therefore declare that, unable longer to endure the curse of Monarchical Government, we aim at founding a Republic based on universal suffrage, which shall secure to all the intrinsic value of their labour.

The soil of Ireland, at present in the possession of an oligarchy, belongs to us, the Irish people, and to us it must be restored.

We declare, also, in favour of absolute liberty of conscience, and complete separation of Church and State.

We appeal to the Highest Tribunal for evidence of the justness of our cause. History bears testimony to the integrity of our sufferings, and we declare, in the face of our brethren, that we intend no war against the people of England – our war is against the aristocratic locusts, whether English or Irish, who have eaten the verdure of our fields – against the aristocratic leeches who drain alike our fields and theirs.

Republicans of the entire world, our cause is your cause. Our enemy is your enemy. Let your hearts be with us. As for you, workmen of England, it is not only your hearts we wish, but your arms. Remember the starvation and degradation brought to your firesides by the oppression of labour. Remember the past, look well to the future, and avenge yourselves by giving liberty to your children in the coming struggle for human liberty.

Herewith we proclaim the Irish Republic.

The Provisional Government.
