Chinese Fishing Nets

The unofficial emblems of Kerala’s backwaters, and perhaps the most photographed, are the half-dozen giant cantilevered Chinese fishing nets on Fort Cochin's northeastern shore, known locally as "cheena vala". A legacy of traders from the AD 1400 court of Kublai Khan, these spiderlike, 10m-tall contraptions rest on teak or bamboo poles and require five or six people to operate their counterweights at high tide.

Modern fishing techniques are making these labour-intensive methods less and less profitable, with nets slowly disappearing from Kerala's coastline.

Kerala Backwaters 😍

Backwater by definition means “a part of a river not reached by the current, where the water is stagnant”, and Kerala showcases a great deal of its picturesque backwaters. The coastal regions of Kerala have a network of waterways, inlets, estuaries, lakes and natural canals connecting coastal towns. This interlinked body of waterways is known as the backwaters in Kerala, over 900 km of which is navigable.

The Beautiful Wei Sawdong Falls, Meghalaya

This beautiful 3 step waterfall is located on Khasi Hills at outskirts of Cherrapunji (Sohra) around 58kms from the capital city of Shillong in Meghalaya. The phrase “No Pain, No Gain” beholds completely true for Wei Sawdong Waterfall as it tests your physical ability to its core. The view-point from where the first picture is taken is reachable through a moderate hike of around 15-20 mins. However to experience the real beauty, one needs to climb down steep route further without any proper stairs. And for a part of the stretch, the rocks are around 1ft – 1.5ft apart which makes it climbing back a bit harder than usual.

Hampi's most exquisite structure, the 16th-century Vittala Temple stands amid boulders 2.5km from Hampi Bazaar. Work possibly started on the temple during the reign of Krishnadevaraya (r 1509–29). The structure was never finished or consecrated, yet its incredible sculptural work remains the pinnacle of Vijayanagar art.

The courtyard's ornate stone chariot (illustrated on the ₹50 note) is the temple’s showpiece and represents Vishnu’s vehicle with an image of Garuda within. Its wheels were once capable of turning.

The outer ‘musical’ pillars, supposedly designed to replicate 81 different Indian instruments, reverberate when tapped.

Indian forests boast of a unique diversity of wildlife. They are home to some of earth’s most fascinating wild animals. Riverine forests provide excellent habitat for wild elephants also known as Asian elephants, the largest (by size) living mammal in India.

Corbett has more than 700 Asian elephants. Earlier, there were much fewer elephants in Jim Corbett National Park but their population and number in Jim Corbett park has increased significantly in recent decades

The legendary Golden Temple is actually just a small part of this huge gurdwara complex, known to Sikhs as Harmandir Sahib. Spiritually, the focus of attention is the tank that surrounds the gleaming central shrine – the Amrit Sarovar, from which Amritsar takes its name, excavated by the fourth Sikh guru, Ram Das, in 1577. Ringed by a marble walkway, the tank is said to have healing powers, and pilgrims come from across the world to bathe in its sacred waters.
