The fishing village of Howth, Dublin ☘️ from a small trading port in the 14th century, Howth has grown into a busy and affluent suburb of Dublin, a favourite with the rich and famous. The structure you see on the cliff is a Martello tower.
About 50 of these small defensive forts were built on Ireland’s east coast in 1804 when an invasion by Napoleon Bonaparte was feared. Napoleon and his colossal army had already conquered Spain, Italy, Switzerland and the Netherlands, and it was thought that Ireland and England were next on his list. The Martello tower in the picture is one of 21 to have survived in County Dublin. This one houses a vintage radio museum exhibiting radios and gramophones from the early 1900s to the present day.
