Great LGBTQ history tour today with Tonie Walsh.
Going out on a cold day is always a challenge but it was absolutely worth it! This was part of the Dublin Human Rights Festival but I hope it will take place again in the future.
On this picture Tonie is just in front of Project art centre where his show will run till the end of next week πŸ˜€

While on my holidays I saw this absolute gem of women's history. This is Hristina Hranova. The first known female life guard. She was a lifeguard for 17 years in Varna Bulgaria and saved the lives of 54 people. She was also a midlife and delivered over 3000 babies! What a lady! As if that was not enough she swam from one end of the Varna bay to the other and established a 5km swimming competition that is still held every year.

I deliberately left the Magdalene Laundries out of the tour. It is a story I didn't feel I could do justice in a short walking tour. I am struggling to believe such a thing existed so recently.
This 45 min documentary is a good opportunity to hear the stories of the women who spent time in the laundries.
North Inner City Folklore Project

Personal accounts from women who spent their adult lives in the convent of Our Lady of Refuge, the Gloucester Street Magdalene Laundry. This 45 min documentary was broadcast on RTÉ Radio in 1990

A fascinating story of a French opera singer who enjoys fencing and gets in trouble with the law quite a bit :)
Talking of breaking societal norms!

Julie d'Aubigny (1670/1673–1707), better known as Mademoiselle Maupin or La Maupin, was a 17th-century swordswoman and opera singer. Her tumultuous career and flamboyant life were the subject of gossip and colourful stories in her own time, and inspired numerous portrayals afterwards. ThΓ©ophile G...
