Between the Sea and the Sky

The striking beauty of L’Esterel Park never ceases to amaze its visitors. Over 32 000 hectares of pine forest, red rock, lakes and crystal-clear rivers still bear witness to times long gone, when this part of the world was still attached to the African continent. Many local legends were spun around its name, the magic fairies and hidden treasures.
Come and discover it for yourself. We organise various walking, hiking and cycling excursions in the area with a gourmet alfresco lunch, full service and equipment provided.

Make Tea to Boost Your Mood

While most herbal teas you choose are likely to be a treat, look for the following herbs that are especially effective for hormone and neurotransmitter support. Enjoyed as lovely teas, they will keep you warm, hydrated, and balanced.

Green Tea
Green tea has been scientifically proven to increase neurotransmitter levels. It contains the amino acid L-Theanine, which boosts levels of serotonin and dopamine, while also reducing the adrenal stress hormone cortisol. Know that green tea contains enough caffeine to get you going any day.

Turmeric Tea
A beautiful anti-inflammatory aid that also helps improve wellbeing and mood as it influences both serotonin and dopamine – the feelgood hormones.

Rhodiola
Rhodiola influences the neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine by allowing them to more easily pass through the blood-brain barrier. Clinical studies have shown Rhodiola to help with overall depression, insomnia, and emotional stability. It can also increase energy and stamina, regulate the heartbeat, protect cells, and improve mental performance. As an adaptogen, Rhodiola promotes a calm response to stress by optimizing adrenal function.

Ginger
There is a solace to be found in a cup of warm ginger tea. Full of nutrients and vitamins, ginger banishes lethargy, boosts your energy levels and lifts your mood.

NATURAL WAYS TO INCREASE DOPAMINE LEVELS

Like serotonin, dopamine is a neurotransmitter. Commonly known as a “feel-good” brain chemical, dopamine is responsible for reward-driven behaviour and pleasure-seeking activities. Dopamine levels contribute to mood, sleep, focus, and memory, among other areas, which is why an imbalance could impact how you feel. Some symptoms of a dopamine deficiency include fatigue, lack of focus, insomnia, forgetfulness, sugar craving and anxiety.

In order to keep good levels of dopamine naturally, we need to exercise regularly, sleep well, eat more protein and properly relax. A brisk walk, practicing yoga for an hour a day and meditation on a regular basis would significantly increase dopamine levels after a three-month period. Try Yoga Nidra for deep relaxation and comfort (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7H0FKzeuVVs).

A tyrosine-rich protein diet also plays an important role in the production of dopamine. Chicken, fish, eggs, and legumes are great. You can also add in other tyrosine boosters like avocados, broccoli, spinach, and kale to your diet as well.

Some great places to relax and 'work on dopamine levels' would be:

Quark Patagonia Cruises and Expeditions

Patagonia encompasses the vast southernmost tip of South America, and is shared by Argentina and Chile. The Andes Mountains is the natural divide between Argentine Patagonia (marked by arid steppes, grasslands and deserts) and Chilean Patagonia (which is known for its glacial fjords and temperate rainforest). Many visitors to Chilean Patagonia gravitate to Torres del Paine National Park for its waterfalls, lakes, verdant forests, mountains and the chance to see the Southern Patagonian Ice Field. Also popular is Tierra del Fuego (“Land of Fire”), an archipelago off the southernmost tip of the South American mainland. The archipelago includes Cape Horn, a rocky headland on Hornos Island, and the Diego Ramirez Islands, which are the southernmost albatross breeding grounds in the world.

Some of the Highlights and Points of Interest:

Glacier Alley is a string of tidewater glaciers that tumble down to the edge of the sea from the massive Darwin Ice Field (also known as Cordillera Darwin), which covers an area that extends over 890 square miles (2,300 square kilometres). Located along the north shore of the Beagle Channel and surrounded by snow-capped peaks, most of the glaciers were named after European countries—Holland, Italy, Germany, Spain and France—by the 19th-century explorers who mapped the region.

Dramatic landscapes define Tierra del Fuego, an 18,572 square mile (48,100 sq. km) archipelago off the southernmost tip of the South American mainland, across the Strait of Magellan. Shared by Chile and Argentina, the archipelago consists of the main island, Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego, Cape Horn and Diego Ramirez islands. Tierra del Fuego is known for its glaciers, snow-covered mountains, vast tundra and wind-sculpted trees. Its main island, Isla Grande, is home to the Argentine resort town of Ushuaia, which is the starting point of many Antarctic expeditions.

Torres del Paine National Park is one of the most stunning wilderness areas in South America, encompassing bright blue icebergs, vast glaciers, lakes, mountains and rivers in Chilean Patagonia. The 448,280 acre (181,412 hectare) park was designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1978. The park was named after the three granite pillars that tower over the Paine mountain range: Torres d'Agostini, Torres Central and Torres Monzino, which rise up to 8,200 feet (2,500 metres) above sea level.

Looking at the sunny side of life
Serotonin: happiness and satisfaction.

Serotonin is a complex neurotransmitter that brings us the feelings of confidence and self-esteem. It is at higher levels when we accomplish activities that reinforce our sense of self-worth, purpose and belonging. Feelings of loneliness and depression are usually associated with low serotonin levels.
Having fun while riding a bike, helping others – all has been shown to increase serotonin, along with getting some sun or a well-deserved massage. Other ways to up serotonin is by reflecting on what we have in life, experiences, people and things that make us feel grateful, loved, and important.
In need of some more ideas? Then come with us on a cycling or a hiking break in the beautiful Mallorca, the Italian Dolomites or the sunny Cote d’Azur. Even looking forward to having a fun vacation can make us smile and get that serotonin going.

Seeds of Happiness

Living in a world of an “always on” culture, we are locked in a vicious circle of dwelling on the past and worrying about the future. Finding the ways to reclaim the present and setting time for yourself are the keys to a longer and happier life. How do we do it? Would eating balanced diet and following designer fitness classes do the trick? Well, not exactly, unless we aim at a perfect body and a sound blood test. The difference lays in the pleasure that we “get or get not” in what we do. In other words, we need to unlock our Hormones of Happiness, all those endorphins that are produced by our brain. Over the next three weeks we shall look at how to naturally enhance and balance the production of Serotonin, Dopamine and Oxytocin. In the meantime I leave you with the words of wisdom from His Holiness the Dalai Lama, “The more we care for the happiness of others, the greater is our own sense of well-being”.
