One of four Tope for the Kildare men yesterday in the largest shark measuring 1.4 metres. All the sharks were treated with the care and respect these apex predators deserve. All were measured, sexed and tagged before being promptly released back in the sea by our skipper.

Corporate day out for these guys last week. Pick up at Rossaveel ferry port in the morning. Fishing in Into for lunch and refreshments before being dropped back to Rossaveel again in the evening.

Liam, with a nice winning 35 Lbs Tope caught on Sunday. Conditions were challenging with a strong breeze leading to a fast drift, that wasn’t producing much fish. So we decided to anchor in 20 fathoms of water. Things improved then with Po***ck, an odd mackerel, Pouting, Gurnard, Bull Huss, Dog fish, Ling, Liam’s Tope, and the half Po***ck. Colleen had a good sized Tope up as far as the back door but he slipped the hook at the last moment. There was even a Pipe fish landed but he wasn’t counted as he came up in another fish and not on a hook😂 The Chef still managed to cook more fish for lunch in the choppy conditions, before we settled in to listen to the match on the radio on the way back to Rossaveel.

This young man, yesterday, had a nice big juicy po***ck on the line. But when he got it up to the boat, he realised something had taken a big bite out of the fish, half the fish actually. He was genuinely surprised, but not as surprised as the poor fish. Judging by the bite size it was more than likely a Porbeagle Shark. You just never know what’s lurking beneath the surface!!

On Saturday we had the pleasure of having Wicklow Bay Sea Angling Club out with us on competition. Two boats, ourselves and the Maighean Mara. The Brazen H***y was at the sharks 🦈 We fished 3 hours at drift and 3 hours at anchor. The drift was non stop Po***ck and Wrasse with the lads using mostly Ragworm in our boat as bait. At anchor over a small patch of sandy bottom things quietened down a bit but the lads still got a few Thornback Ray and a good few Dog fish. All told, the 4 lads in our boat managed to get 242 fish to the boat between them. All were returned to fight another day. Some really good Po***ck fishing around Galway bay and the islands at the moment with a healthy looking size variety.

Anyone who’s been out fishing with us has probably seen me staring into a screen in the boat and wondered what I was looking, and I’m sure some wondered if I was feeling alright😂😂 Anyways, that screen, in my opinion is most important piece of electronic equipment we have on the boat. It’s called an echo sounder or depth sounder and some might know it as a fish finder. It works by transmitting sound waves from a transducer or transmitter on the bottom of the boat and measuring the time it takes for the wave to come back. The longer the time the deeper the water. Simple. It’s an old invention, developed, like most marine electronics, during wars to hunt for enemy U boats ect. Current sounders have a much wider beam, kind of like shining a flashlight down from the boat so they can pick up echoes from around the boat too, not just directly under it. The two photos above show the sounder in our boat. The first shows the ground underneath the boat at 11.3 fathoms depth (a fathom is 6 feet or 1.8 meters) with kelp growth on the bottom and a shoal of po***ck just above the ground. Now we know where to fish 😉 The second shows something I hadn’t noticed before. It was when we were over at the cliffs of Moher on Friday morning. The bottom is at 12.1 fathoms depth, but at the top of the screen you can see something just under the surface beside the boat. The cliffs of Moher have a healthy population of Razorbills and Puffins. Puffins being quite shy tend to dive when the boat gets close, and our sounder was picking this up. You can actually see the dive and then it levels out at about at between 2 and 3 fathoms. The same morning we also encountered hundreds of Razorbills feeding on bait fish out in the deeper water which was a beautiful sight to see😃

Yesterday we ventured out into the dark deep waters in search of sharks. While the morning was slow, the weather was good enough to sit back and relax and wait for the action to start (I always have a bag of popcorn on board for days like this)😂 We must of missed the breakfast, because it wasn’t until lunchtime that we got our first run. For the next 25 minutes it was man against beast, with plenty muscle on both ends of the line. Eventually Caden brought a nice Porbeagle to the boat, estimated at 6 foot and 140Lbs. The fish was tagged (green tag in one of the photos) and released to fight another day. Well done Caden with his first Shark in Ireland 🦈🦈💪💪
