While County Galway rose in defence of the newly proclaimed Irish Republic in 1916, Galway City remained loyal to either the parliamentary Nationalist or Unionist tradition. However, during the War for Independence or Tan War, Galway city experienced some brutality from Crown Forces.

Jim's Revolutionary Tour of Galway focuses mainly on the events of 1920 where there were a number of incidents around the city.
