This photo was taken in 1957 outside my grandmother Nanny Dolanโ€™s house in Woodquay, after a sun-filled day at the Galway Races โ€” a time when life felt wonderfully simple.
From left to right: my cousin Annette Fortune, my Aunt Chris Fortune, Nanny Dolan, my mum Bridget King holding my sister Valerie, and my cousin Peggy Fortune.
In front are my brother Liam, myself (David), and my sister Rita.
Looking back, itโ€™s a treasured snapshot of family and childhood โ€” and moments that live on in memory. Sadly, some have long since passed โ€” including, most recently, my dear brother Liam, who is deeply missed.

This summer, Woodquay comes alive every weekend with pedestrianised streets, outdoor seating and live music in the heart of Galway City!
As part of Galway City's Night-Time Economy programme, Summer Evenings in Woodquay will showcase a series of free live outdoor performances, creating a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere for residents and visitors alike. The initiative aims to support local businesses, celebrate Galway's rich cultural and musical talent, and encourage people to enjoy the city centre from 6pm.
During the Galway International Arts Festival there will be pre-concert outdoor gigs from 6.30pm-8.30pm, Wednesday to Sunday, in the heart of Woodquay. ๐ŸŽถ
From Race Week onwards, Woodquay will host gigs and other exciting events from 6.30pm-8.30pm, Friday to Sunday. ๐Ÿ‡
