PRESS RELEASE

Celebrating 10,000 years of Ireland’s Natural Heritage

As part of the celebrations for Heritage Week 2016 why not discover the 10,000 years of history locked in Girley Bog, Co. Meath. A special heritage event is being organised by the Irish Peatland Conservation Council (IPCC). It will be a guided nature walk on Girley Bog on Sunday 28th August. The meeting point for the walk will be at Causey Farm, Girley, Fordstown, Navan, Co. Meath at 2pm. The guided nature walk will explore the wonderful wildlife on Girley Bog and in it’s bog pools. The participants will learn how to identify the variety of plants and animals that are typical to this raised bog habitat. This event will celebrate 10,000 years of Meath’s natural heritage while exploring how this beautiful Natural Heritage Area was formed.

The IPCC are also in the process of producing a Girley Bog Peatlands Education Pack which will be available later in the year. This pack will include a PowerPoint presentation on Girley Bog with notes for teachers and curriculum-linked worksheets for primary school students. The pack will be circulated to over 100 primary schools in Co. Meath and will be available on the IPCC website www.ipcc.ie.

The Girley Bog Peatlands Education Park for primary schools will provide a very useful resource for teachers. It will offer a new, fun and exciting way to learn about peatlands in the classroom while encouraging teachers and students to visit Girley Bog and experience this amazing ecosystem first hand. It will build an appreciation of peatlands and the important services that they provide and at the same time deliver part of the school curriculum. It will also foster awareness of Natural Heritage Areas and the importance of conserving and protecting sites such as Girley Bog NHA.

Join the IPCC and explore the beauty of bogs and Ireland’s natural heritage on Sunday 28th at Girley Bog, Co. Meath. Meeting at Causey Farm at 2pm, bring strong footwear and rain wear. This is a free family event and no booking is required.

This heritage event and education pack are kindly supported by Meath County Council under their Community Heritage Grants Scheme 2016.

The key to the plant's success is its small leaf hair point, or awn. These 0.5-2 mm-long hair-like structures at the tip of each leaf function like a Swiss Army knife in their ability to collect water from a variety of size scales. Whether the plant gets buckets of rain or only the occasional passin...
