2025 - new horizons await. Sometimes they'll be clear and sometimes they'll be cloudy, but the new year brings new and different perspectives - it's not what you're looking at but how you're looking at it.

Happy New Year - whatever horizon you're looking at, I hope you can enjoy the view x

Yeaaah I know, I know, Aurora pics are the new "it's snowing!" or "look at my big boy/girl off to school" pics, but so what, it was a special event to capture especially considering usually celestial happenings in Ireland are covered by cloud!

As we leave the village of viaducts, Redondela slowly disappears behind us as we begin to climb our way up again as we continue along the Louro valley. The ascent is steeper at times as we proceed to the village of Arcade, where we cross a Romanesque bridge spanning the quaint and quiet harbour town, which is where Napoleon was defeated by the Spanish during the War of Independence.

Its narrow, winding streets test our legs as we again climb our way up and out of Arcade and continue onwards and upwards over Alto da Canicouva before (thankfully) descending once again into Santa Marta with its quaint early 17th century chapel, providing sanctuary from the heat of the high early afternoon sun.

We leave the tarmac for a cool and refreshing walk along a forest path meandering alongside a river in the Tolmeza and Solcedo valley, in stark contrast when we stumble out of the tranquility into the hustle and bustle of Pontevedra, which starts to reveal its inner beauty with one of the best preserved medieval centres in Galicia. We head through the narrow streets before reaching the 13th Century church of Santa Maria and the Capela da Peregrina which although it appears round is actually in the shape of a scallop, symbolic of the Camino.

A quick rest and refresh before we explore the city further in the cool evening light and then hit the sack before hitting the road in the morning towards out next stop, Caldas de Reis.

With the more industrial landscape of O Porrino behind us, the terrain becomes easier as it makes way to rolling farmlands as we cross the Louro valley. Verdant fields give way to forests as we climb up towards the chapel of Santiaguino de Antas to find ourselves soon surrounded by pine trees in an expanse of woodlands which provides respite as a cool haven of shade as the sun beats down as it rises high above us.

We briefly follow a Roman military road where the Camino starts its decent through hamlets and townlands down towards Redondela - known as the "village of viaducts" due to the two 19th Centrury railroad viaducts spanning the town.

Rest and refuel in Redondela for the night and onwards early in the morning to the village of Arcade and then Pontevedra - we will update again tomorrow on our progress steadily northwards.

Buenas Noches,
Jonathan and Marion xx

Day one of our Camino Portugues is complete.

We left the wonderful old town with its charming winding medieval streets, the Camino Portugues winds its way up to the old town, as we we walked out across the countryside, through forests and townlands and stopped at old medieval and Roman bridges, hamlets, alongside rivers and past the historic "Cruz de la Telmo" where San Telmo died of a fever on his way back from a pilgrimage from Santiago de Compostela in 1251. We finally reached the town of O Porrino 20km later, known for its "Rosa Porrino", or red granite, which is exported to China, Japan and Italy.

We are staying in a wonderful guesthouse outside the town for the night, where we put the feet up before we don our walking shoes once again in the morning as we head our way northwards, on to Redondela.

Goodnight, or, Buenas Noches from O Porrino x

Shared a story about walking the Camino Portugues, from Tui (as can be seen in the pic above) to Santiago - doing this with my 77yr old mother to raise much needed funds for the MS Society of Ireland on behalf of those who are afflicted with this disabling neurological condition.

Will share photos here along the route, but you can get regular updates and indeed donate if you feel that you would like to support us on our quest.
