This image is captivating, showing some of the rich history of Achill and the breathtaking views and amazing night skies at Grace O'Malley (Granuaile)'s Kildownet (Cill Damhnait) Castle 🏰, located in the south-east corner of Achill Island. This 15th-century Irish tower house was constructed around 1429 by the Clan O'Malley. Grace O'Malley, the legendary pirate queen born around 1530, left her mark, establishing such strongholds along the western seaboard. ⚓

Today, the iconic landmark Tower House at Kildownet, along the Atlantic Drive, stands 40ft tall, with three storeys, guarding the passage connecting Clew Bay with Blacksod Bay.

🌊 Explore the rich maritime history at the mouth of Achill Sound, where the present-day Achill Island RNLI station stands as a testament to its strategic significance.
