Fly Orchid

Look at the beautiful flower I found on my walk today.

This remarkable flower mimics a fly to attract a specific pollinator, a wasp species. Not only that, it leaves little to chance. It also emits a scent, the pheromones of a female wasp. Who would guess that a small flower could be so complex! 😀

WILD STRAWBERRY

COMMON DOG VIOLET
This violet is unscented and is a woodland flower, so it flowers early. Common folklore associates the flower with modesty, as its head is drooped. It’s flowering in abundance at the moment.

The flower of the Blackthorn bush.
The Blackthorn is the first flowering plant in our native hedgerows and is in full bloom at the moment. It is called Blackthorn as the white flower contrasts with the dark bark. The Blackthorn will fruit in autumn, it's berry being the sloe.
The Blackthorn is a member of the Rose family, and of the sub-genre plum. The sloe looks like a miniature plum, but is far too bitter to eat. It's great for flavouring gin with though! I'll be foraging in the autumn to make my own Sloe Gin.
That most Irish of items, the Shillelagh, is made from Blackthorn.
