Seamus Heaney wrote this for a Northern Ireland still deep in the Troubles. It closes The Cure at Troy, his 1990 version of a Greek tragedy, and it's the line he's quoted for most. Bill Clinton read from it in Derry in 1995; Joe Biden has returned to it for years.
Heaney was a Derry man, a farmer's son from near Bellaghy and a Nobel laureate, and you can walk his home ground at the Seamus Heaney HomePlace.
The far shore is closer than it looks.
