Seamus Heaney wrote this for a Northern Ireland still deep in the Troubles. It closes The Cure at Troy, his 1990 version of a Greek tragedy, and it's the line he's quoted for most. Bill Clinton read from it in Derry in 1995; Joe Biden has returned to it for years. Heaney was a Derry man, a farmer's son from near Bellaghy and a Nobel laureate, and you can walk his home ground at the Seamus Heaney HomePlace. The far shore is closer than it looks.

This one happens in a home, not a hall. A private morning with an Irish baker, at her own kitchen table, learning the three things she makes without thinking: plum and cinnamon jam, soda bread, and proper scones.
You'll cook the plums down until the whole kitchen smells of cinnamon, then mix and knead the soda bread and score the cross into the top before it goes in the oven. While it bakes, the scones come together. Then you sit down to the lot of it, warm, with butter and a pot of tea.
Because it's private and built around you, it moves at your pace, and there's room to ask the questions you'd never get to in a big group.

You'll find that line framed on kitchen walls from Donegal to Boston. Nobody can tell you who wrote it, which feels about right for a blessing. It just got passed along until it stuck.
The wishing tradition runs deep here. A blessing for the road, a blessing for the fire, a word said quietly as someone heads out the door. And "lilt" isn't a throwaway. It's the rise and fall in the way people talk, the sound of a story being told well.
The load bit is the part that lands, though. Everyone's carrying something.

The alarm goes at half four. By five you're walking uphill in the dark, and if you've timed it right, the light comes up over Lough Corrib just as you reach the top.
That's the trade. An early start for about twenty minutes of the lake to yourself before anyone else is awake.
It's worth the effort, when the water goes flat enough to hold the sky. No wind, no boats, just the birds starting up and the far shore coming back into view one island at a time.
Bring a flask. The tea tastes better up there. Thank you to Talina from the UAE for sharing your footage with us.

Before you taste it, you learn to say it.

Irish whiskey is triple distilled, which is where the smoothness comes from, and it's usually a little softer than its Scotch cousin. A tasting walks you through that: the pot still, the grain, the single malt, and how the same water and barley end up tasting so different.
You don't need to know any of it beforehand. That's what the person pouring is for.

Why Ireland? Fair question. Here's the honest version.
It's small enough to cross in a day and varied enough that you won't want to. You can stand under hundred-metre cliffs in the morning and be in a snug with a fiddle going by night. The welcome is real, not rehearsed. Nobody's in a hurry, and after a few days, neither are you.
It rains. We won't pretend otherwise. But the light after the rain is the thing people come back for.

Lough Corrib is the second-biggest lake in Ireland and one of the best wild brown trout fisheries in Europe. You don't need your own gear or your own boat. You need a ghillie who knows where the fish are on the day, and we know a few.
Out early, engine off, drifting the shallows over limestone. Late summer is dapping and wet-fly water, the mayfly long gone. Some days you'll fill a net. Some days you'll catch the weather and a flask of tea and not much else, and it's still a day well spent.
