Connemara is a wild, rugged, beautiful corner of the world, and we'd like to keep it that way. This is home for us, so it's personal.
That comes down to three things, really. We look after the place and the wildlife that lives in it. We celebrate the customs and traditions that make Connemara what it is. And we keep the money where it belongs, with the local people who make your trip worth taking, rather than watching it disappear off somewhere else.
None of that is a chore. It's half the reason we love doing this. When the people who live here do well, everyone does, you and us included.
Because when locals thrive, we all thrive.

Before books, before television, Ireland had the fire and the voice.
The keeper of it was the seanchaí (say "shan-a-key"), the traditional storyteller, and really the memory of a whole community. A good one carried the genealogies, the legends tied to local hills and rivers, and the great old tales of Fionn mac Cumhaill and Cú Chulainn, all held word for word in the head. They travelled house to house, welcome wherever they went, with a seat by the fire as payment. Much of Europe let that slip. Ireland held on to it, especially in the Gaeltacht, and you'll still hear it today at a kitchen table or the quiet end of a pub.

The original jack-o'-lantern was a turnip, hollowed out, carved with a frightening face and lit with a candle to keep wandering spirits away on Samhain night. It's named for Stingy Jack, who tricked the Devil, was turned away from Heaven and Hell both, and left to roam the dark with an ember inside a turnip. There's one from around 1850 in the National Museum of Ireland, and it's far scarier than any pumpkin. The pumpkin came later, brought in by Irish emigrants in America who found it easier to carve, before the whole idea sailed back home.
Halloween was ours first. Come and spend it where it started.

A traditional Galway Ho**er in all her glory! The road west runs out at Lettermullen, in the Gaeltacht heart of South Connemara. That's where you board a Galway Ho**er: black hull sealed in tar, built from native oak, a single mast carrying three sails. These boats carried turf across Galway Bay for generations. The food festivals come thick and fast in autumn, one town after another, but the idea is old. Harvest here had a name: Lúnasa, still the Irish word for August, marked the start of it, when the first of the year's new food was brought in and everyone gathered to eat it together. The ones you'll pass this autumn are the same thing in a newer coat. The crops are in, the markets are full, and the people behind the food are the ones handing it to you.
You don't plan a trip around a food festival. You land in the middle of one, and it makes the trip.

A trad session isn't a gig. Nobody's on a stage, nobody's booked, there's no setlist. A few players pull chairs into a corner with a fiddle, a flute, maybe a box or a bodhrán, and someone starts a tune. If the others know it, they come in. If they don't, they wait for the next one. It's not played for the room. It's played for each other, and you're welcome to sit close and listen.
You'll find them the length of the west.

The oldest oyster festival in the world runs on our own doorstep, and it's back in Galway city the weekend of 25 to 27 September.
The Galway International Oyster & Seafood Festival has been going since 1954, built around the opening of the native oyster season. The centrepiece is the World Oyster Opening Championship, where shuckers from around the globe race to open their oysters cleanly and against the clock. It's faster, and a good deal more tense to watch, than it sounds.
Away from the marquee there's the Oyster Trail through the city's pubs and restaurants, farm tours out on the bay where the native oysters are actually grown, live music, and a fair bit of stout to go with it all.
Native oysters are in season September to April, the months with an R in them, as the old rule goes. Late September is the very start of it, so you're eating them at their freshest.
