2,000 years ago, Ireland was already celebrating Halloween… 🎃👻

Long before Halloween became a global celebration, the ancient festival of Samhain was being marked here in Ireland.

Samhain signalled the end of summer, the final harvest and the beginning of winter. It was a time for feasting, games, fires and gathering together as the long winter nights approached.

And according to legend, the story of Samhain began right here in County Meath.

At the Hill of Tlachtga, now referred to as the Hill of Ward, near Athboy, a great Samhain fire was lit, with the festival marking this important moment of seasonal transition.

But Samhain was also believed to be a time when the boundary between our world and the Otherworld became thinner. The spirits of the Sídhe were said to emerge from their ancient mounds, including places such as Newgrange, Knowth and Loughcrew.

The traditions surrounding Samhain evolved over centuries, eventually influencing many of the Halloween customs we know today - from dressing up and telling stories to food, games and lighting lanterns.

So Halloween isn’t just something Ireland celebrates. It’s part of a story that began here.

And nowhere is that connection stronger than in Meath and the Boyne Valley.
