Comhairle na nÓg is a group of thirty young people, between the ages of twelve and eighteen, from all over the county of Meath. We are the Youth Council for County Meath. We are elected onto Comhairle at the annual AGM where other young people vote us in by a secret ballot election. Each member is elected on for a two year term. Once the council is elected, we meet monthly at various locations thr
oughout County Meath, usually the County Council chamber in Navan. At our meetings we have a set agenda and discuss matters arising in the county that affect us as young people. We also have a set work programme which we work on for a two year period. This can be a range of different topics from Drug and Alcohol Awareness to Youth Facilities in County Meath. We also meet with the County Council to involve them in our work as much as possible. Members may occasionally meet with other groups or organisations within the county in order to learn about their work, help them with anything relating to young people and to involve them in our work. As a member of Comhairle, we have many opportunities such as trips and visits to different places in order to meet new people and learn more about youth participation. We attend events such as the Comhairle na nÓg National Showcase Event, Dail na nÓg and a host of consulations with other young people from across Ireland. We have taken part in a youth exchange, 'The Tale Of Two Youth Councils' with Gateshead Youth Assembly and have visited our friends in Cork City and Cork County Comhairle na nÓg. Comhairle na nÓg is a great way for young people of today to have an active role in their community and the wider world. It gives young people a voice in matters that directly effect them on a local and national level. It gives them an insight into the workings of councils, boards and encourages them to become active citizens.
