Adventure returns to Lough Derg on Saturday, 11 July 2026, as Portumna hosts the Gaelforce Great Lake Swim – an unforgettable open-water challenge in one of Ireland’s most spectacular freshwater settings. Swimmers will start and finish at Portumna’s swimming area, with the stunning waters of Lough Derg providing the perfect backdrop.

Whether you're new to open-water swimming or an experienced athlete, there’s a distance to suit you:

🏊 750m – ideal for first-time open-water swimmers
🏊 2km – perfect for those looking to step up their challenge
🏊 3.9km – the full Ironman swim distance for experienced competitors

As you make your way through the lake, you'll be surrounded by the natural beauty of Lough Derg, with its island-dotted waters and rich heritage creating a truly unique race experience.

The swim forms part of the Gaelforce Great Swim Trilogy, with participants progressing from river to lake to fjord across three incredible events. Safety remains a priority, with compulsory tow-floats, on-water rescue support, kayakers and medical teams throughout the event.

Make a weekend of it and enjoy the wider Gaelforce Great Lake Swim Festival, featuring wellness activities, family entertainment, water sports and live music throughout Portumna.
