Dún Eochla is a superb stone ring fort located at the highest point on Inishmore in the Aran Islands. The inner walls measure approximately 5 metres in height, and over 3 metres in depth. This fort deserves far more attention than it gets with it’s fantastic location and remarkable condition.

It has been estimated that Dún Eochla was built sometime between 550 and 800 A.D. Like most stone forts, this one is a bit over restored, but I am very impressed by the dry stone walling. The steps up to the ramparts were much like the original steps; something not seen on other restorations.

A steep and winding concrete pathway leads down the cliffs to Dunquin Pier. This is the mainland harbour for the Blasket Islands and tarred canvas covered canoes known locally as ‘naomhógs’ rest on their stands. These small boats, rowed by a crew of three or four men, were used to carry people, livestock and provisions between here and the islands. The stretch of water between Dunquin and the Blasket can be treachorous and many lost their lives here. In summer months a modern ferry brings visitors from Dunquin pier to the main island An Bhlascaod Mór (The Great Blasket) -

Carrick, County Donegal

The Sliabh Liag (Slieve League) cliffs are truly breathtaking, the cliff face of Bunglas rises over 600m above the raging ocean. Only experienced walkers should venture beyond the viewing point onto One Man's Pass which loops around the Pilgrim's Path. For over a thousand years, there was a Christian pilgrimage to these sacred mountains to appreciate their cultural heritage.

📍 HORN HEAD
Dunfanagh, County Donegal

Horn Head cliffs rise straight out of the water to a height of about 600 ft/180 m on the ocean side of the peninsula. They are an internationally important colony for breeding seabirds. Species include the European s**g and the razorbill. It is designated as an Irish Natural Heritage Area and as a refuge for fauna specifically seabirds. Horn Head cliffs are also designated a Special Protection Area and a Special Area of Conservation by the Irish government.

📍BALLINASTOE WOODS
Roundwood, County Wicklow

Part of the mighty Wicklow Way, Ballinastoe Forest is a fine little stop-off point if you're doing the Sally Gap Drive and you hopping out of the car for a ramble. Ballinastoe Woods walk is arguably one of the best-known of the many walks in Wicklow. Mainly thanks to a section of the Ballinastoe Woods boardwalk looking a bit like a scene from Lord of the Rings.
