Born in Co. Wexford, Ireland, in 1745, Barry is known as the 'Father of the Navy' for his role in the establishment of the American naval operations. Starting his seafaring career as a cabin boy, he eventually became the first naval officer to capture a British vessel during the revolutionary war.
