🌿 Did You Know?

At Craggaunowen, you'll find a real Iron Age wooden track called a Togher. Originally laid in 148AD, it's one of Ireland's most fascinating ancient structures!

Before modern roads, travel through boggy, wooded countryside was a serious challenge. To connect important sites, ingenious wooden trackways were built across bogs and marshes, constructed by laying runners of birch or alder on the surface, then covering them with large oak planks to create a road.

These remarkable tracks were essential for transportation, allowing people to move goods, livestock, and themselves across otherwise impassable wetland areas. A simple but brilliant solution to a very real problem!

Come and walk in the footsteps of our Iron Age ancestors and discover the history of this ancient wooden trackway at Craggaunowen. πŸͺ΅πŸŒΎ

πŸ’«β›΅ Clare County Council has marked 50 years since the Brendan Voyage began with the unveiling of a new plaque at Craggaunowen.

The anniversary also coincides with the completion of improvement works across the Craggaunowen site. These enhancements include the restoration of walking trails and the addition of a traditional forge, where visitors can now observe live blacksmithing.

As part of the 50th anniversary commemorations, a plaque was unveiled at the Brendan Boat House in celebration of the pioneering spirit of explorer Tim Severin and his crew by Clare TD Joe Cooney and one of the original crew members, Arthur Magan.
