Sligo`s Got Music

In association with Creative Ireland, Ballygawley Music Festival and Ocean FM
Sligo’s Got Music will be launched this Wednesday evening (23/4/2025) at 6pm in Queen Maeve Square.

Press Release

Wednesday 23rd April 2025, 6pm

Sligo’s Got Music has been officially launched by the Cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council, Cllr Declan Bree

Sligo`s Got Music is now accepting submissions. Send us your song, cover or original to be in with a chance to record it.
The project aims to showcase the north-west’s wide range of musical talent. The project is being coordinated by Ballygawley Music Festival who have partnered with Ocean FM and is supported under the Creative Ireland Programme.

6 finalists/songs will be chosen from the entries to sing live on Ocean FM over June.
The winner will receive a full day recording day at Blue Room Studio in North Sligo and will sing at Ballygawley Music Festival in July. The winner will be announced on Ocean FM on July 11th.
Speaking at the launch, Thomas Walsh from Ballygawley Music Festival, ‘’we are really excited about this project. We are eager to give a space to up and coming artists and to showcase the vast musical talent that we have across this region.
Patricia Keane, Acting Creative Ireland Coordinator said, “Sligo County Council are pleased to support Sligo’s Got Music through the Creative Ireland Programme. Sligo’s Got Music allows artists an opportunity to develop their creativity by composing original compositions or interpreting previous recordings. The initiative is a wonderful opportunity for everyone in the community to experience local artists performing live music”.
Mark Halton, Creative Director Ocean FM, said, “ We are delighted to be involved in this great initiative with Ballygawley Music Festival. Ocean FM has always prided itself on supporting both local and Irish artists. Over the past few years, we have worked closely with IBI, Hot Press and Coimisiún na Meán to help promote Irish artists via the Irish Music Months “New Local Hero” that has seen local artists such as Paddy Keyes receive national acclaim”.

Entries must be submitted to [email protected] in *wav or *mp3 format. Entries open on May 1st and close on the 6th of June.

Thomas Walsh, “we are encouraging the many talented musicians across the Northwest to send us your song”.

Aughris head is just another stunning location in County Sligo. It is here that you can enjoy a stunning coastal walk and admire its promontory fort.

Aughris promontory fort overlooks Pollaree bay with its beautiful shingle beach. The fort is locally known as O'Toole's castle.
Where the seaward sides of the fort were naturally defended by sea cliffs, the inland facing side was protected by ramparts.
These ramparts are still visible today, and once these mounds would have had wooden fencing on top of them in order to defend the fort from incoming attacks.

Joining the ConTempo Quartet on April 26th is Christopher Marwood on cello

Christopher Marwood graduated from Cambridge University in 1983 and went on to study at London’s Royal Academy of Music and Conservatorium Maastricht. Cello teachers included Florence Hooton, David Strange, Ralph lKirshbaum, William Pleeth and Radu Aldulescu. His chamber music mentor for several years was Emmanuel Hurwitz.
As cellist of the Vanbrugh Quartet for 32 years, Christopher Marwood enjoyed a busy career performing throughout Ireland and touring worldwide. The Quartet released over thirty CDs encompassing a wide range of repertoire and including the complete Beethoven quartets (“fine enough to bear comparison with any set” Fanfare, USA).
