Today is Lá Fhéile Mícheál, or Michaelmas.

Traditionally, September 29th marks a deadline. By the end of the day, the last of the harvest had to be gathered, and the final wild fruits were picked from the hedgerows. Families would come together to prepare and share a feast to celebrate the occasion.

While celebrations today may be more subdued, the end of September remains a time for gathering, enjoying good food, and sharing stories.

Step into a lively pub in Ireland, get chatting with a local or fellow traveller, and you might find yourself part of a round.

If a friend buys you a pint while you’re deep in conversation, don’t feel the need to reach for your wallet right away. Simply enjoy the drink and let the conversation flow. When your glasses begin to empty, take the opportunity to buy the next round, and let the cycle continue.

The round is an unwritten social norm in Ireland, and it is one of the easiest ways to share a friendly moment in a crowded room.

There is a particular quality to the light off the coast of Ireland at this time of year.

As summer transitions to autumn, the sun can often be seen piercing the cloud cover in bright shafts of gold. The light turns the headlands into living watercolours and illuminates the rolling green landscape.
