You're looking at one of the 32 iron bench lampposts that line Passeig de Gràcia in Barcelona.

Most people assume Antoni Gaudí designed them. He didn't. They were created in 1906 by Pere Falqués i Urpí, Barcelona's municipal architect at the time. The mosaic on the bench uses a broken tile technique called trencadís, the same one Gaudí later made world famous in Park Güell. That overlap is probably why the mix up still happens more than a century later.

When the lampposts first went up, almost nobody liked them. Newspapers mocked the swirling iron shapes. One satirical drawing showed an angry man warning Falqués that if he built anything else this ugly, they would hang him from his own lamppost. Critics even joked that a recent storm should have knocked down the lampposts instead of the trees.

There is also a popular myth about them. Some people believe the metal panel on the bench hid a coal heater to keep passersby warm in winter. It didn't. That panel actually covered the mechanism used to raise and lower the old arc lamps for maintenance.

More than a hundred years later, the lampposts Barcelona once wanted torn down are now one of its most photographed details, sitting on the same avenue as Casa Batlló and La Pedrera.
