“Is gel polish really banned in the EU? My clients are worried. Should I be worried?”

I’ve had so many nail friends (and their clients!) asking this question today. Here’s the scoop:

* Many brands are free of TPO - (refer to SDS on your products.)
* The EU’s restriction is about a specific ingredient, Trimethylbenzoyl Diphenylphosphine Oxide (TPO)—not gel polish as a whole.
* The studies behind this? Animals were fed very high doses of TPO. (yes that’s right, FED) That’s not at all how gels are used in the salon.

Now, I’m not a scientist—so I’ll point you to Doug Schoon a highly respected scientist in our industry. In his open letter to the European Commission, he explained that these exposure conditions do not compare to how we actually work with gels. (Because oral ingestion just is not part of nail services.)

For perspective: Doug cites other similar animal studies that showed adverse fertility effects from high consumption of things like:

- Ethyl alcohol (drinking alcohol)
- Monosodium glutamate (MSG)
- Fruit sugar (fructose)
- Soft drinks
- Caffeine

Bottom line: while the headlines sound scary, the reality is much less dramatic. Unfortunately sensational reporting is the way of the world today.

Do your research, ask the questions and please share what you learn with your clients. Continuing our education and spreading knowledge is the key to our success.

Elma's Beauty Salon is 20 today ! I'm feeling so proud and grateful.. Thank you to every single person who has stepped through my door over the last 20 years, so many who still do 🥹
There have been many ups and heartbreaking downs 💙.. but coming to work has always been my pleasure, especially since moving 🏡
Life is so so short , so make sure to work at what you love and to hug the ones you love often...
Have i another 20 in me, I sure hope so 🤣💪💙

What a night and what a way to finish a very special night.. Beyond proud of my Dad, Bryan Louise Finn and our Family 💙.. and all the artists/ Venue/ Back stage team, that took the time to come and celebrate Ben. But most importantly.. Thank you to everyone who came, bought tickets/ raffle tickets and made so many generous donations.. The biggest heartfelt THANK YOU 🥹💙
