Otter Cottage at Dromore

Otter Cottage at Dromore Easily accessible, Otter Cottage is the perfect holiday location for a couple, family or larger group seeking peace and quiet in the Irish countryside.

Located on the stunning Blackwater River in County Waterford, Otter Cottage is the perfect holiday location for a couple or larger group seeking peace and quiet in the Irish countryside. It sits on a riverside lane that sees almost no traffic - two or three cars a day (including the postman!). The salmon jump, and its not unusual to see otters frolicking. The country walks include one of your own,

a twenty-minute stroll around the property with stunning views over the Blackwater River. Across the river sits a historic castle with its tower folly. On the ground floor, the cottage includes a full kitchen, living room and sunny conservatory. A single flight of stairs take you to the master bedroom - with double bed - a second double room (with single beds) and a third single bedroom. There is also a full bath with shower and tub. The most exceptional part of a stay at Otter Cottage is your private access to the riverside garden. Whole days can be whiled away watching the ever changing life of the river from here. The beautiful seaside village of Ardmore is 20 minutes drive, as is the historic town of Lismore - with its magnificent castle, cathedral and heritage center. Youghal - again only 20 minutes by car - has one of the longest and most beautiful strands in Europe. Dungarvan, 25 minutes by car, is the starting point for the wonderful Waterford Greenway walking and cycling path. Fabulous food is also within easy reach. The Tannery in Dungarvan, The Cliff House Hotel with its Michelin-starred restaurant, Richmond House in Cappoquin offer unique takes on Irish cuisine, but all strive to source locally. For those interested in hiking, the Blackwater Valley offers some of Ireland's most unspoilt walking terrain - from the seashore to the hills of the Knockmealdown and Comeragh mountains. Or take on our own pilgrim's path, St. Declan's Way - that links the ancient ecclesiastical centres of Cashel, Co. Tipperary with the Waterford coastal village of Ardmore. The path passes through our nearest village, Aglish, about 4 km. from The Riverbank. Kayaks and canoes can be rented at Blackwater Kayaks in Villierstown (2km). Sailing in Dungarvan, and an adventure center at Ardmore, are within a half an hour's drive. A little further away, there is fantastic surfing at Tramore.

The glories of fishing the Blackwater!

Spotlight on… Ballyduff Upper /An Baile Dubh (The Black Village)

In the autumn light
Showering shadows
Were starting to collect crystals
In the melted waters below
And the gold is beginning to spread
Upon the leaping salmon.

The Salmon by Jack Aylward

Ballyduff has a Roman Catholic church, a parish hall and a national school but there’s more to this part of the world that meets the eye.
Ballyduff Castle, now in ruins, was built in 1627 by the carpenter Andrew Tucker for the Earl of Cork. The Drew family gained possession of it later in the 17th century. The village is located on the River Blackwater which is spanned by the late 19th century Ballyduff Bridge. The former Ballyduff railway station (opened in 1872 and closed in 1967) was located on the Waterford to Mallow line. The river is renowned for its salmon, sea trout and trout fishing.

A great fishing experience.
Salmon, Sea trout and Brown trout fishing on prime fishing beats River Blackwater Co. Cork and Co. Waterford
Blackwater Valley Fishery has national and international clients . They use experienced Guides to enhance the experience . The old Garda Station building has been fully renovated to provide excellent accommodation .

Ballyduff Upper Tidy Towns has a high level of community spirit. Hard work is evident in the maintenance of the village from the grotto to the barrack rails even to participation in the Waterford Walls project . Ballyduff even has its own registered daffodil called the Ballyduff Beauty!

The life and soul of Ballyduff Upper can be felt in the activities of The Booley House. It incorporates the very best of Irish music , song and dance. The resident Seanchaí James Lenane is an All – Ireland winner in his field. The original step dancing routines are well received by audiences. The dancers are amazing too and perform Brush Dancing which is a real showstopper. The traditional musicians and singers are top -class. Everybody leaves the performance beaming and in a positive mood.

“The labor movement (and the left-wing movement connected to it) was once a venue in which working-class art flourished, a space for not only economic and political gains but creative ones too, with organized labor providing the community and material support such work requires. Theater was a central part of that culture: Waiting for Lefty, a 1935 play about a taxi strike, became one of the most performed (and most banned) plays in the country. As unions have bled members and power, those strong ties — and the whole culture they were connected to — have largely disappeared. We are much the poorer for it.”

Working people, unions, the arts, my boy. A match made in heaven.

At REI’s flagship Manhattan store, management has fought workers’ attempts to win a first union contract. In the meantime, workers have channeled their anger into working-class art: a play about work and organizing based on their experiences at the company.
