In Dublin, Whitefriar Street Church is home to relics of St Valentine, and every February it becomes a quietly special place for couples (and for anyone who simply loves a good piece of history). And if you would like to continue the story, I always recommend heading south-east to Waterford, Ireland’s oldest city, then out along the Copper Coast for sea views and that lovely “slow down” feeling.

Waterford is where my heart is – and at Christmas, it truly becomes something magical.

Every year, Ireland’s oldest city transforms into Winterval, a sparkling Christmas festival that winds its way through the Viking Triangle, the quays and the historic streets I grew up with. Think twinkling lights, a big wheel on the waterfront, markets, music, ice skating, and the scent of mulled w**e in the crisp evening air.

Since it began in 2012, Winterval has grown into Ireland’s largest Christmas festival, drawing visitors from all over the world and helping Waterford earn the title “European City of Christmas.” It is festive, joyful, and still wonderfully local at its heart.
