רימה: נדידות בפיסול מזרחי
אני שמח לבשר על פתיחתה של תערוכת היחידה של האמנית רותם תמיר, שתתקיים ב-14 בספטמבר 2024 במוזיאון רוצ'סטר שבמינסוטה, ארה"ב. בתערוכה זו, פרי מחקר של שלוש שנים, תמיר חוקרת את הפעילויות הביתיות והקהילתיות הקשורות למורשתה הטריפוליטאית והעיראקית, וביניהן: יצירת בדים מרהיבים, הכנת הפיגמנטים לצביעתם, עיצוב החותמות מעץ המוטבעות על הבד, ויצירת מזרני הג׳ראיה ששימשו ללינה ולאירוח.
התערוכה לובשת ביטוי רוחני יהודי, המתבטא הן בצורות כמו המזרן העגול והן בפסל הברונזה של המילה "לב". עבודת הסאונד של ניר יונסי, "Um El Dunya" (אם העולם), משלבת בין היתר שירה יהודית משפחתית מצפון אפריקה.
רימה, דודה רבא של רותם, הייתה אישה אמיצה שעזבה את משפחתה בעיראק בראשית המאה ה-20 ונסעה ברחבי העולם במטרה לאסוף ולרכוש בדים. רותם הלכה בעקבותיה, מסעה הוביל אותה לקוצ'ין שבהודו ולסיני, שם למדה את רזי המלאכות המסורתיות. מתקן לאריגת צמר העשוי עץ, החוצה את חלל התערוכה, מזכיר מתקן עינויים ומסמל את הסבל שחוו הנשים בהכנת המזרנים.
זוהי תערוכה חשובה עבורי, כחלק ממחקרי רבת השנים אודות הביטויים החזותיים השאובים מיהדות המזרח, ונושאים שהודחקו לשוליים במשך שנים רבות. בתערוכה הגדולה האחרונה שאצרתי, "חשומה" (2019), השיח עדיין נסוב סביב שאלת האמנות המזרחית. בתערוכה הנוכחית, הביטוי החזותי קובע עמדה בלתי מתפשרת באשר לביטוי האמנותי המזרחי, המושרש עמוקות במסורת היהודית ובזמן העכשווי.
לתערוכה הופק קטלוג בעברית ובאנגלית, הכולל מאמרי מחקר שנכתבו על ידי ד"ר קציעה עלון ועל ידי.

Rima: Passages in Sephardic Sculpture
I am pleased to announce the opening of Rotem Tamir's solo exhibition, which will take place on September 14, 2024, at the Rochester Art Center in Minnesota, USA. In this exhibition, Tamir explores domestic and community activities related to her Tripolitanian and Iraqi heritage, including the creation of stunning fabrics, the preparation of pigments for dyeing, the design of wooden stamps used on fabric, and the crafting of Jeraya mattresses used for sleeping and hosting.
The exhibition embodies Jewish spirituality, expressed through forms like the round mattress and a bronze sculpture of the word "LEV." Nir Younessi’s sound work, Um El Dunya ("Mother of the World"), integrates North African Jewish family singing.
Rima, Rotem's great-aunt, was a courageous woman who left her family in Iraq at the beginning of the 20th century to travel the world, collecting and purchasing fabrics. Rotem followed in her footsteps, traveling to Cochin in India and the Negev Desert in Israel, to learn traditional crafts. A wooden wool-weaving loom crosses the exhibition space, reminiscent of an instrument of torture, symbolizing the suffering endured by women in mattress-making.
This exhibition is significant for me as part of my long-term research into the visual expressions rooted in Eastern Jewish traditions, themes that have been marginalized for many years. In the last major exhibition I curated, "Hshuma" (2019), the discourse still revolved around questioning Jewish Eastern art. In this exhibition, the visual expression takes a definitive stance, deeply rooted in Jewish tradition and contemporary life.
A catalog in Hebrew and English has been produced for the exhibition, featuring research articles by Dr. Ktzia Alon and myself.
