Our Lady of Sorrows reflects on the deep grief and devotion of Mary as she witnessed the suffering and crucifixion of her Son, Jesus. Located near the path of the Via Dolorosa in Jerusalem, this sacred site invites pilgrims to reflect on the sacrifice of Christ and the fulfillment of God’s promise through the cross.

Throughout Scripture, Mary’s journey reveals a mother’s faithfulness, obedience, and trust in God’s plan. At the cross, Jesus entrusted His mother to His beloved disciple, demonstrating His love and care even in His final moments (John 19:25–27).

Why it matters:
The story of Our Lady of Sorrows reminds us that faith is often found in the midst of suffering. Mary’s sorrow points us to the greater hope found through Jesus—the victory of the resurrection and the promise of redemption.

Luke 2:33-35 NIV
Jesus Presented in the Temple

33 The child’s father and mother marveled at what was said about him. 34 Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother: “This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, 35 so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too.”

The Mount of Olives stands as one of the most powerful biblical landmarks in all of Jerusalem.

Overlooking the city, it is a place deeply woven into Scripture—where prophecy was spoken, prayers were prayed, and promises were fulfilled. From Jesus weeping over Jerusalem, to His time in the Garden of Gethsemane, to His ascension into heaven 40 days after the resurrection, this mountain holds moments that shape the foundation of our faith.

The Mount of Olives tells the story of the gospel:

Prophecy → God’s promises.
Prayer → Jesus’ obedience.
Sacrifice → The path to the cross.
Ascension → Christ’s reign.
Promise → The hope of His return.

The Mount of Olives -

It was here that Jesus wept over Jerusalem, prayed with His disciples before His crucifixion in the Garden of Gethsemane, and ascended into heaven 40 days after His resurrection. From this hillside, you'll overlook the Kidron Valley, the Temple Mount, the Eastern Gate, and the City of David.

Many Jews and Christians also believe the Mount of Olives is where the Messiah will return, making this a place that points not only to biblical history but to the hope still to come.
